Sourcing

Ponce came to national attention in 1959 as the wise-cracking cab driver Kazuo Kim on the Warner Bros detective series Hawaiian Eye,[2] which ran for four years on ABC.

Ref 2 is sourced to IMdB. On Wikipedia, we may use IMdB sparingly for some facts, but article content generally requires stricter sourcing. Please help replace the use of IMdB in these instances with links to books, newsapers, journals, or some other RS. Viriditas (talk) 19:42, 20 June 2010 (UTC)

YouTube

Please see WP:YOUTUBE for when to link to video sites and when to avoid it. You may still be able to use these links as sources, depending on the content. Viriditas (talk) 20:26, 20 June 2010 (UTC)

Only one would have been in violation. Removed it. The other You Tubes were posted by the person who took the videos. Maile66 (talk) 20:34, 20 June 2010 (UTC)
Good work. The issue is now one of verification and the use of primary sources and how to do so withou engaging in OR. So, for example, can you find supporting references, preferably secondary, that support the material cited by the YouTube refs? Also, can you verify all of the content in secondary sources without resorting to interpreting primary or relying on home videos? The exception to this would be if the author of the video was notable and/or the videos were previously published. And, while we can't link to copyrighted videos, we can certainly use them as sources if they are reliable. Viriditas (talk) 22:19, 20 June 2010 (UTC)
The one You Tube I deleted was not that vital. It was just the opening sequence to the TV show. The other videos were shot by the owner of a restaurant where Poncie Ponce visits and, he is the one who posted it on You Tube. The supporting source for that restaurant video was already a primary source in the story - I just needed to add it as a reference by the video. Other than that, what do you consider secondary sources? All sources now in the article, except for the video, are from published newspaper accounts. What you see in this article is all the references I could come up with. If it requires more, we are are stuck. Maile66 (talk) 22:35, 20 June 2010 (UTC)
See WP:SECONDARY. As long as everything can be verified in a secondary source or verified in a primary without interpretation, we are ok. I'm looking for more sources right now. Viriditas (talk) 03:48, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

Please create sections for this article. Viriditas (talk) 22:23, 20 June 2010 (UTC)

Good work. Please expand the lead section at your convenience per WP:LEAD, summarizing the main points of the biography. I can help if you like. Viriditas (talk) 03:49, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
Done Maile66 (talk) 13:34, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
I made some changes more inline with WP:LEAD. Feel free to keep expanding it. Viriditas (talk) 19:05, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Discography

Please add a discography when you get a chance. Viriditas (talk) 03:51, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

Added one. Viriditas (talk) 04:00, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
And I found another. While I was at it, I added discographies to Dick Jensen, Benny Kalama and John Kameaaloha Almeida. Maile66 (talk) 13:33, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

Later years

Should mention heart surgery circa 2000.[1] Viriditas (talk) 04:06, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

Done. Thanks for finding this. Maile66 (talk) 10:52, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

Images

Lots of images available, but few, if any are "free". Viriditas (talk) 04:15, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

Could use some pointers on uploading images. Never done it and do not know the mechanics of the process. Maile66 (talk) 10:28, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
I'm happy to help. The first step is to find a group of images you like, and choose the best one to start with. Ideally, you can also request the use of a free image from the copyright holder using a release form. We could also pull a screenshot off the video or use a record cover or promo shot for the TV show. Are you leaning towards using a specific image that you like? Viriditas (talk) 03:51, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
First of all, let me thank you for all the pointers. It's been a good learning curve. There are not a lot of images of Poncie by himself. I kind of like this record sleeve on Flikr Ponce-No Huhu and this group shot Hawn Eye
You have a good eye! Those are the same two images I was considering as well. One thing to keep in mind is that we already have File:Hawaiian_Eye.JPG to deal with. Although we both agree that a better image would be preferred, using this image here to begin with might give you some insight on what is needed in regards to a FU rationale (see Wikipedia:Non-free_content_criteria). In any case, since we have a FU image of Hawaiian Eye to work with, let's focus on the use of an album cover. If you can add sourced critical commentary about "Ten Cent Perfume/No Huhu!" into the article, I think we can upload it. Viriditas (talk) 10:07, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
Such as it is, I got a Billboard star rating on the single. Nothing else seems to be out there for the single.Maile66 (talk) 10:45, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
Let's start by adding File:Hawaiian Eye.JPG. The caption and rationale should be updated accordingly. Viriditas (talk) 18:34, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Filmography

Please add a filmography appendix. Thanks. Viriditas (talk) 19:03, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Big Island

Born on Maui but grew up on the Big Island. There's got to be more information about this part of his life. Viriditas (talk) 19:25, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

OK...right now I'm in the middle of updating his personal appearances. I ran across some Billboard mentions of his world appearances. Maile66 (talk) 19:31, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

I notice you're making edits while I am. Try not to touch the "Discovery and Stardom" section. I've found more and am breaking it up into a separate section on "Recordings" and one on "Movies and club dates."
My apologies. I'll leave it alone for a while. If you like, you can use a variation of the {{in use}} template until you are finished with major edits. Viriditas (talk) 20:43, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
Done for a while. I still need to search for this Big Island life. But I think I've gotten the rest. Maile66 (talk) 21:01, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Removed false Don Ho story

I have removed the story about the entire cast and crew going to see Don's show every night after filming. Don Ho was based in Hawaii, in that era still singing at his mother's nightclub in Kaneohe, Hawaii. All the Warner Brothers shows, including Hawaiian Eye, were filmed on the Warner back lot in Burbank, California. — Maile (talk) 02:57, 12 July 2023 (UTC)

Birth name of Poncie Ponce

An unsourced June 22 edit by unregistered user Ppchaltas changed Ponce's real name from Ponciano Hernandez to Ponciano Ponce. I have now sourced his birth name as Hernandez with an article in the Maui News. This same unregistered user also posted on July 23 that Ponce died on July 19. Would like to assume good faith on that edit, but there appears to be nothing on the internet that Ponce has actually died. Need verfication, please. — Maile (talk) 12:55, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

An unsourced change has been once again made to revert his birth name of Hernandez to Ponce, which is not sourced reliably anywhere. This change was made by an IP address. — Maile (talk) 16:41, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
Once again, someone has listed a death date for Ponce. It needs to be sourced. Otherwise, this is still a BLP. — Maile (talk) 19:18, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

Now that his death has been sourced, I also added the obit source from the Honolulu Advertiser-Star Bulletin, which confirms his birth name as Hernandez, and that his name was changed to Ponce by Jack Warner.— Maile (talk) 00:25, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

We may never know for sure, but a lot of sources also list his birth name as Ponciano Tabac Ponce, so I changed it to that. — Maile (talk) 00:55, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
