Ponca tribe

I don't have time to write the article at the moment but when the article on the Ponca people (or tribe) gets written, it ought to include the fact that Carter Camp, a writer, activist, and American Indian Movement leader is (probably) its most famous member. He is responsible for the famous quote, "We decided that our Indian people were more important than long jail terms." I wanted to get this down before I forget it and didn't have any other place to put it.--Rockero 22:37, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

Ideas for Supplementing the Ponca City Article

The following topics may warrant sub-headings: prairie architecture (many historic homes), the arts (as an example, the Ponca Playhouse may well be Oklahoma's oldest community theatre company in continuous operation), city parks (As I understand, most of Ponca City's 10+ parks were planned when the original lots were designed in 1893 at the land run), Native American culture (in addition to the Ponca tribe, the city is surrounded by Kaw, Osage, Otoe-Missouria, Pawnee, and Tonkawa tribes). Points of Interest

Recently, several curious items have been added to the Ponca City Points of Interest list. Examples include a local bookstore, a church congregation, and a link to Ponca City High School 2007 seniors. If there is a criteria allowing these type of links, virtually any retail business, church, and interesting public school links should also be included. This is clearly not the intent behind a "Points of Interest" list.

The church in question does not own its own property and meets in temporary rented facilities. From the standpoint of historical interest, perhaps First Christian Church (which exemplifies prairie architecture and design) would be acceptable for inclusion. Nonetheless, barring some regional significance of the properties, I would say that churches should not be listed here. Without this standard, each congregation, synagogue, home group, or other religious organization would feel entitled to use this list as advertising space. This would surely have a negative effect upon the usefulness of this article. Home learning2 19:47, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

I, too, have personally deleted that entry three times, only to find it replaced each time, with no explanation as to what makes this particular church a "point of interest".71.120.34.169 22:03, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

I fixed it again. Doesn't seem to Christian like to keep vandalising the article.

Camp McFadden

I took the section on Camp McFadden and moved it from Ponca City to Kaw Lake. Camp McFadden is not in Ponca City. It is 8 miles from Ponca City. Camp McFadden is on Kaw Lake. Therefor it seemed more appropriate to put it in the section of the geographic body it is nearest to. Reservoirhill 21:49, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

Need help with List of Notable Natives and Residents

I've added the dates of birth and death to the list of "Notable Natives and Residents" and put the list in order of the date of birth. that avoids the problem of having to decide which ones are "more important" and putting them at the top of the list. There are four people on the list that I don't have the date of birth for. Could someone help provide this information. Also who is "Heartthrob" Phillip Barnard? I know nothing about pro wrestling. Is Mr. Barnard considered prominent enough in pro wrestling to merit inclusion in the list? The Olympic Gold Medalists I have no problem with nor the author of children's books. I could not find any information on the web to substantiate that Mr. Barnard's entry is anything more than a vanity entry by a 17 year old boy who lives in England. [1] Reservoirhill 19:08, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

J. J. McGraw

Jcmcapital has added J. J. Mcgraw to "Notable Natives" with the following entry.

J. J. McGraw James J. McGraw organized First National Bank and Trust Company of Ponca City. He managed the bank for 15 years, operated a lumber business and was associated with John G. McCaskey and Lew Wentz in opening the Tonkowa Field. Later he associated with E.W. Marland in the oil business.

I have cut back the entry for McGraw to the same level of detail as the other entries in "Notable Natives" section which are are all one-liners. I don't think we should be adding a lot of detail about one person and keeping a five or six word entry to describe a senator, a chief of the Poncan tribe, and a man who was once one of the wealthiest men in the world. McGraw is not notable enough to have his own Wikipedia entry as are many of the others listed. Also we need a year of birth to be consistent with the other entries. I have found a brief biography of McGraw in The Ponca City News and from reading it, McGraw was a prominent citizen of Ponca City in the early 1900's but he doesn't appear to have much notability on a national or even a state level. If anyone has any additional information about the notability of McGraw, let's discuss it here. Reservoirhill 17:42, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

My opinion is that if McGraw is not notable enough to have his own article then he should not be on the list of notable Poncans. If I hear nothing and get so inclined I'll jerk himl out myself. Carptrash 13:51, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

James McGraw did have all - local, regional, and national significance. I will be happy to provide details if anyone intereseted. Overall, the Ponca City page is well-written and mistake free, with good representative images. Kareem Salama

I grew up in Ponca and agree with most of the Notable Natives and Residents, but don't recall who JJ McGraw was or what impact he had on the town. Also, who is Kareem Salama? How many people in Ponca know he is a recording artist? No one that I know of has heard of him. Is he really Notable? I think that if someone has had a feature story printed about them in the New York Times, that makes them notable. Just as Ponca City is proud of Native American leaders like Standing Bear and African Americans like Bill Pickett and Joyce Carol Thomas, we should be just as proud of Muslim Americans like Kareem Salama who exemplify the best of the multicultural heritage of Northern Oklahoma. If you read the article in the Times, you can see just how proud Mr. Salama is of his Oklahoma heritage. “We hope to establish an American Muslim identity,” says Salama, “and what is more American than country music?” I am sure we will be hearing more from Mr. Salama in the future.
