Coaster = Big Dipper et al.[edit]

I was raised going to the PNE and the old Playland landscape is as familiar to me in some ways as old schools or backwoods stomping grounds....so I'm curious as to the fate of the Little Dipper roller coaster for kids, which used to be past the bumper cars at the other end of the fairway from the Coaster - whjch we always called the Big Dipper and I think at one time there was a sign to that effect; or at least it was used in writeups of the amusement park for sure. Don't have a cite for this or would have added it; also the Wild Mouse was preceded by the Mad Mouse, which was scary enough but not as high or large in surface area taken up; not sure when it changed over. And aren't the standard r4ides like the Tilt-a-whirl, octopus/spider and salt-and-pepper shaker still there? Haven't been in in years, so maybe they're no longer popular like they were; there was somethng called Avalanche too, and things ilke it go by other names; a circular cars-on-arms thing on a sort of circular hill-course/runway, everybody boards at once, then it starts; around and around up and down in and out of the building/tent; other rides like it have various names. There's also what was called sometimes the Meteor, sometimes the Comet, the centrifuge where you're plugged to the wall as the floor drops out; and they have one of those big European swings now don't they? Guess I should go check out an amusement park to see some time, long past the age of liking my head spun inside out as a means of fun....Skookum1 (talk) 03:02, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

To answer your questions: - Tilt-a-whirl I believe was recently retired. The Spider I have sadly not seen in years. Salt-n-pepper shakers (AKA roll-o-plane or Loop-o-plane) were replaced by various newer models: SkyMaster, FootLoose, Invterter and other similar rides. All owned by Westcoast Amusements and not part of the regular season lineup. I have never heard of Avalanche but by your description I think you are talking about Musik Express... yes it is still there. Meteor, Comet (aka rotor) was replaced a while ago by the Gravitron and newer models called Startship - it is brought for the PNE only. And yes we have a wave swinger.

Yes you should check out the P.N.E. and go early, and stay late :)

I have no idea what happened to the little dipper, but I do have pictures of it that I should upload. The big dipper was dismantled and soon after the current "Coaster" was erected. TheFiend.ca

A few comments[edit]

A lot of the content on the Playland page right now is great for nostalgia (old, short-lived rides and attractions), and finding out about very minute details (such as nicknames of rides or details about old, short-lived rides). However, not all of these details should be on that Wikipedia page; it doesn't exactly conform to Wikipedia standards.

For example, the "Rides at P.N.E. only [Provided by Westcoast Amusements]" section is not particularly useful, since the lineup of rides does often change from year to year. In addition, since those particular rides only around for two weeks, it doesn't seem all that useful to have the table around. I propose removing that table and summarize some of the more notable rides in paragraph form.

Also, the gallery should maybe be shrunken considerably, scatter some of the images on the margins of the page, and move any images that aren't already in the Commons over there.
