PADW or PDAK?[edit]

I'm confused! What's his name? Is it Philip Arthur Dennis Wadey? Should it be Philips Dennis Arthur Kattner? Hartenhof (talk) 12:09, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Hartenhof: according to the book that came with the Bouquets from a Cloudy Sky box set, "May" was the name of his uncle and aunt, who raised him until he was 9. Afterwards, he had to live with his mother and stepfather, whose name was "Kattner". There is no mention of "Wadey", but this name does appear in a few books. Maybe it is his mother's maiden name? @Hartenhof:, @Ælfgar:: According to the UK General Register Office Birth Register (here, but subscription-only), the birth of Philip D A Wadey was registered in the quarter Oct-Dec 1944 in Dartford, Kent; mother's maiden name Botham. Then, Daphne Wadey or Kattner or Botham [sic] married Ronald Kattner in Sidcup in 1953. Although Larkin's Encyclopedia is often used as a WP:RS, it's not infallible, and this seems to be a mistake - no doubt May's real name at the time he became famous was Kattner, but that was certainly not the name with which he was born. I suggest that the box set liner notes (which I don't have) be used as a source. Ghmyrtle (talk) 12:43, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

In the Guardian's obituary, they say "Phil was the son of Dennis and Daphne Kattner." Maybe they confused the surnames of her two husbands; later in the same paragraph they say "When he was 10 his birth parents decided they wanted him to return" while the Bouquets book explains that it was his mother and his stepfather. Hmmm.... Well, there is an argument that we should use what reliable sources like the Guardian say, even where we strongly suspect that it's wrong. The change of birth name in the article - from Kattner to Wadey - was made back in 2010 in this anonymous and unsourced edit - which I strongly suspect was well-informed and correct. But, if editors want to change what I've written in order to accord with the Guardian obit, I can't really object. Ghmyrtle (talk) 20:55, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Delinotte[edit]

I would argue against using Didier Delinotte's Les Pretty Things, une institution as a reference for this article. This book is riddled with so many typos, mistakes and inaccuracies that it cannot be described as reliable. It may be better to go back to Delinotte's own source, Alan Lakey's Growing Old Disgracefully, even though it is out of print and impossible to find nowadays. – Swa cwæð Ælfgar (talk) 19:22, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
