Pitches[edit]

Trivia Section[edit]

This section is real awkward. Baskin Robbins -- who cares? I would suggest that this whole section be removed in accordance with WP:TRIV. There are some good quotes in this section. I suggest adding a quote section and avoid the clutter? -Mitico 17:22, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you look back in the article history, the trivia item in question used to read like this: "During the 2003 ALCS, Hughes had a high school job at Baskin Robbins, and had to work that night. He kept calling his mom to check the score.[1]" until someone stripped it to just the Baskin Robbins line. I can see why the other info was removed, but the whole line should have been removed. Greg "Opie" Hughes just mentioned on the "Opie and Anthony" show that he and Phil Hughes are cousins. Can we put that into the trivia section?

Standing ovation?[edit]

I remember listening to the game, and hearing that Hughes received a standing ovation when he was pulled from the game. I spent a little time looking online, and couldn't find a reference to this. It says a lot when the home team applauds the performance of a visiting team's pitcher, and certainly demonstrates the Hall potential of this performance. Does anyone have a reference to this?

Orphaned references in Phil Hughes[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Phil Hughes's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Uniform Number[edit]

Can anyone find a source for the reason why Hughes wears the number 65? I have been looking for a while, but I cannot seem to find that information. Also, can anyone find out why he switched to 34 before deciding to return to 65 in 2008? From my memory, he originally wanted a number ending in 5 (which I believe is because he had worn #35 in high school), but #65 was the lowest available. Then he went with #34 for a short while when he figured he had "made it" and shouldn't be wearing a spring training number any longer, but he struggled, and superstitiously went back to #65. Some initial thoughts –

Ref 84 should be replaced, since WordPress.com is a blog (and thus, not really a reliable source).

For MLB sources (MLB.com, Yankees.MLB.com, miib.com, etc.), the work should be MLB.com, while the publisher should be MLB Advanced Media (per recently-promoted baseball FL lists Tip O'Neill Award and List of Major League Baseball pitchers who have struck out three batters on nine pitches)
"…in only his second MLB start. However, injury cut short his start…" – the second "start" sounds confusing. I know you mean the start of Hughes' career, but non-baseball readers might think his no-hitter game was cut short.

Just to inform those who are quick to change the template the standard procedures. Anytime a player agrees to a contract signing or trade it's good to wait until it is finalised.
