Welsh language

Am playing with the 2001 census figures for "no knowledge of Welsh" in Pembrokeshire, to see if I can pull out something nice and easy to illustrate the point about the divison between the south and north.

This really is quite diverse, with the Welsh language named communities having generally <50% no Welsh, and quite a lot of English named communities having >70% Welsh. The standard deviation of non-welshness is .19, which is the joint highest with Conwy. Not sure how best to present it (or even how valid that using stdev on variably sized parishes is). Beach

Can anyone find out what award that beach won? I reverted entire edit as too tourist brochurey, would keep the award, but can't find anything googling. Morwen - Talk 17:36, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

"Anglicized" Little England

I have changed this. "Anglicization" implies some sort of process, and there is no evidence for this. Glamorgan is anglicized: East Breconshire is anglicized, but Little England has always been just plain English. LinguisticDemographer 20:35, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Transport

The current section on transport reads like a political news-sheet rather than an encyclopedia article. Most of it probably needs to come out. I removed an obviously non-encyclopedic statement. . . .LinguisticDemographer 16:10, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Whitesands Bay

There is no mention of Whitesands bay in this article although it says here that it's supposed to be one of the best beaches in the world! There is a stub where it is called Whitesand Bay, which is what it is called on my roadmap, but everyone seems to know it as Whitesands Bay, as do the county council. Also, a web search on "Whitesands Bay" comes up with a lot more hits than "Whitesand Bay". Does anyone know which is the correct title? The Whitesand stub doesn't appear to be listed in the List of places in Pembrokeshire either, which is a shame. Richerman (talk) 22:21, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

I've changed the name of the Article to Whitesands Bay as that's how it's shown on the OS maps and added "Beaches" to List of places in Pembrokeshire. I've also added Beaches to this article. Richerman (talk) 16:48, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

School league tables

I removed the 'league table' of school results because Estyn doesn't inspect schools annually, so the exam results cited won't necessarily be directly comparable. People may be aware that since 2001, the Assembly Government hasn't published individual school performance information.[1] Information on individual schools is still available in prospectuses and governors’ annual reports, but adding them all together to produce a local league table may violate WP:SYNTH. There are a few external links that are linking out to little more that Google Adsense pages; one in particular barely has a paragraph of text. Another external link goes to a fairly informative page, but has obvious commercial intention. 7 December edit

An edit on 7 December by User:Voyledd has left "[[Kings of wales" as an isolated fragment. I'd correct it myself but I'm uncertain about the value of the other changes made in this edit. --rossb (talk) 19:31, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

Pembrokeshire Media

Hi Gareth, we added Pembrokeshire Best Magazine to the list of media in Pembrokeshire because it is relevant now that it circulates to more people than all of the other newspapers put together in Pembrokeshire. The magazine is now registered as a newspaper and is also archived at the national library of Wales.

Largest village

A minor point: Saundersfoot is claimed to be the largest village in Pembrokeshire, but St Dogmaels has I am sure claimed that accolade. Anybody know? Tony Holkham (talk) 12:29, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

When does a large village become a town? Saundersfoot calls itself a village, yet it is often described as a town (like a number of other places). On Wikipedia Johnston is reported to be the largest village not just in Pembrokeshire, but in Wales. Hogyn Lleol (talk) 14:39, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Perhaps there isn't a definitive answer, and it may not matter particularly. As it says in Town#England_and_Wales, the concept is subjective, as is village. Tony Holkham (talk) 18:57, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Sport section?

This article doesn't have a sport section, and I'm wondering whether it should. There is plenty of notable sport going on, from team events, motor sport and charity events such as the Tour of Pembrokeshire annual cycling event. Tourism

Does anyone have any more up to date figures on visitors? If other areas such as the Coast Path, Preseli Hills and sea fishing attract significant numbers of visitors, perhaps they should have a brief mention, too? Tony Holkham (talk) 19:03, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

Beach and coast awards 2014

FEE Blue Flag and Green Coast awards have been announced by the BBC [2] today (no details), with Pembrokeshire topping the list, but I don't know whether this is relevant to this article. Tony Holkham (talk) 09:19, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

Wildlife - otters

Do you think there should be a section on wildlife? For example, the BBC reports the PCNPA's appeal for otter sightings in 2013 resulted in 100 sightings, kept in a log at St David's? Gallery

I propose removing the gallery, in line with WP guidelines WP:Gallery - the pics really belong in their respective articles. I've already moved some into relevant sections of this article but the rest seem just random pics from around the county. I'll leave for a day or two in case any objections. Thanks... Culture

Reading the article you might think there was no culture in Pembrokeshire... Any Pembs-specific suggestions or links that might remedy this? They could include -

• Music (orchestras, choirs, bands)
• Art (schools, notable artists)
• Literature (authors, poets, societies)
• Dance

etc...
