In regards to the quote from Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche's book Born in Tibet: “Tai Situ Rinpoche, who was second in importance in the Karma Kagyu school, had died some years before and no reincarnation had been found. The Karmapa could now tell them where the incarnation had taken place. Everyone rejoiced and started immediately to make the preparations." I feel that this quote is misleading. Yes Situ Rinpoche WAS the second in importance in the Kagyu School AT THAT TIME. Historically and currently, the Kunzig Shamarpa is second to the Karmapas and is himself considered an emanation of the Karmapas. According to the hierarchy established by the fifth Dalai Lama the Shamarnag (Karmapa and Shamarpa) are placed just 2 seats below His Holiness Dalai Lama and the heads of the Sakya lineage, who were the original leaders of Tibet before the Gelugpas were put in power by the Mongolians. You can find these lists in the collected works of the fifth Dalai lama. The Situpas are placed considerably farther down the list. It was only after the ban on the Shamarpas by the Tibetan Govt. at the time of the tenth Shamarpa that the Situpas were placed in high favoured rank amongst the Kagyu. Not to say that the Situpas were any less realized or that they were not significant, particularly the eighth Situpa. However, the 16th Karmapa made sure that the Current Tibetan Govt. in Exile, including the 14th Dalai Lama, lift the age old ban of the Shamarpas and allow His recognition to be official in this current incarnation. Hence, Historically and currently, as of the birth of the current Shamarpa, who was recognized by the 16th Karmapa, The Shamarpas are the second in the hierarchy of the Kamtsang or "Karma" Kagyu lineage.
