Montauk, sadly, during the 1970s became known as a notorious party hack who demonized those he viewed as having insufficient party loyalty as "cadre killers", among other epithets he and his kind used against political opponents, real and perceived. He reflected the development of the SWP into a insular sect, steeped in the self-congratulatory sanctimony that such groups shroud themselves in as they deepen their isolation from mainstream society.
