Ad?

This article needs some editing, please. Anyone up for it?

First, let's decide whether or not it's an ad. orthogonal 08:01, 21 Nov 2003 (UTC)

It's not, I wrote it and I'm just a former employee. If it sounds a bit biased, feel free to change the language.

I think a lot of bias can be taken out by condensing the third, fourth, and fifth paragraphs into one. I'd be happy to do it, but I have a few questions: How soon after opening the first store did Schnatter start expanding, or should "Soon" be cut as unsupported? Clearly "This business model was completely different" is a biased statement, so is the model different and if so to what extent? Evidence? Also, don't any other chains do dough preparation and the like outside of the store? I could inquire on the latter two matters with some friends who've worked at Pizza Hut, but that's only one chain. Also, a question as a new Wikipedian: Should I be this hesitant to make the changes, or should I have made them and then asked for these clarifications in talk?
Generally, be bold. Maximus Rex 21:40, 21 Nov 2003 (UTC)
Wikipedia policy is to boldly edit, so go ahead. It's also considered helpful to sign your entries on Talk pages like this one, by appending four tildes to your post. Signing articles, however, is frowned upom. orthogonal 21:41, 21 Nov 2003 (UTC)
I condensed the three paragraphs into one. I also cut the "recent developments," as they seemed like an advertisment and won't age well. Dmbaguley 13:23, 22 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Ok, I've made some changes to remove some bias, and added new info.Feel free to butcher it. Morganmichaels 04:58, 22 Nov 2003 (UTC)

The map of locations is inacurate. I am from Ontario, Canada and I know that the only Papa John's here is in Alberta, and not all of Canada as labled on the map.

We have them in BC too.

Re: He sold his 1971 Z28 Camaro to purchase $1,600 worth of used pizza equipment and began selling pizzas to the tavern's customers out of the converted closet.[7] On the box there is a picture of him as a young adult with the camero in front of the first Papa John's. This doesn't make sense if the above is true. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.53.35.80 (talk) 02:06, 24 January 2014 (UTC)

Motivation for lawsuit

The article currently states that

  • The motivation behind the lawsuit was probably the fact that Pizza Hut co-founder Frank Carney had become a Papa John's franchisee in 1994. By 2001 he owned 133 locations, with his franchise based in Houston, Texas.

This sounds like revenge, and [1] indicates not only that he became a franchisee in the 80s but also that Papa John's "aired a retaliatory spot in which...Frank Carney...appeared at a fictional Pizza Hut conference to declare, 'I found a better pizza!,' meaning Papa John's." This attack and the others in Papa John's ads, would seem a readily apparent motivation. Hyacinth 06:26, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

Pepper

Article incorrectly said that Papa John's includes a jalapeno with each pizza. As edited, it is actually a pepperoncini pepper

In the UK, they don't put the pepperoncini pepper in with each pizza; at least the Papa John's in Reading doesn't. Cach9801 22:33, 15 July 2007 (UTC)cach9801 15 July 2007 23:33

Controversies Among Italians

Shouldn't something be added about the fact that most Italians see Papa John's as a disgrace to Italian food? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Goodfellajohnny (talkcontribs) 11:38, 3 September 2007 (UTC) Nah that really isn't relevant Bushido Brown 02:50, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

Has anyone noticed this guy posting on most American pizza article talk pages? Get a life. Did you ever think that us Sardinians would find the American fear of Sardines to be quite insulting??? I'm serious. We're a great producer of Sardines. :) 04:54, 24 February 2008 (UTC) Minchia d'un cavallo senza palle —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.78.18.84 (talk)

Pizza delivery man arrested after hit-and-run

News at: http://news.mainetoday.com/updates/019159.html.

A pizza delivery man was arrested tonight after allegedly running his car into a pedestrian and then leaving the accident scene, authorities said.

The pedestrian, who was not immediately identified by police, was taken to Maine Medical Center with minor injuries, according to Lt. Bob Ridge.

The accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of Congress Street and Myrtle Street, Ridge said.

Once police arrived, bystanders told them that the vehicle that hit the pedestrian was displaying a Papa John’s Pizza sign.

Police then went to the Papa John’s store on Forest Avenue, where they arrested 43-year-old Adam Gagne. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, according to Ridge. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dancerx1978 (talkcontribs) 18:52, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

Lebron James Controversy

During Game 6 of Cleveland Cavaliers Vs Washington Wizards, Wizards fans were give t-shirts that read Crybaby as they were directed at the Cavalier's Lebron James. This was done by a Papa John's franchisee, who thought Papa John's did not have franchises in the Cleveland-Akron area. Papa John's does have franchises in Cleveland. Papa John's corporate did not sanction the t-shirts, so now Papa Johns on 5/8/08 will have .23 cent pizza day at its Cleveland Area stores. The 23 cent is the number of Lebron James. Papa Johns will also have to make a donation to the Cleveland Cavaliers Youth Fund.

Papiano's

The article makes reference to the Papa John's franchise store in East Lansing, MI, which uses the name Papiano's due to an already existing pizza restaurant named Papa John's. The Papiano's store closed permanently in May of 2008, and the article should be updated to reflect this.

Ideophage (talk) 17:23, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Was there something in the paper or on the news in the Capital area about it? I can't find anything on the closing of Papiano's. As far as Google's concerned, it's alive and well, though I do believe it's gone from the LSU neighbourhood.Sposato (talk) 00:21, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

OC-768 Listed Under Business Ventures

There is absolutely no way each store has an OC-768 connecting it to the central offices of Papa John's. An OC-12, which is of significantly lower capacity, runs upward of $3,000 per month. The link given citing this no longer has information on Papa John's. Shouldn't this be removed? Subjugator (talk) 13:35, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

I agree. The computer system at Papa John's restaurants is primitive. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.223.57.52 (talk) 04:33, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

Yup, retro computers. They apparently have someone making computers in the same time-honored tradition that produced the likes of the TRS-80 and IBM PC. Flash to the past, anyone? 68.37.254.48 (talk) 17:45, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

Camaro is irrelevant

The whole section describing the reunion between John Schnatter and the Camaro has no place in this wiki entry. If someone wants to put it in John Schnatter's personal wiki page and link to it from here, sure. But it's entirely off topic on this page. JH443 (talk) 17:03, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

And to top it off, the article mentions it twice! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 222.111.121.10 (talk) 21:18, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

Agree. Being bold, have removed it here, preserved it with attribution at the Talk page of John Schnatter in case useful there (though in my opinion more than adequately covered in that article already). Martinp (talk) 23:21, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

No More Whole Wheat Crust

Having just spoken to a representative at my local Papa John's, I was told that the whole wheat crust mentioned in the History section of the article was recently discontinued, as it was a poor seller. If the same is true of a majority of locations, IMO the article should be amended to either remove the reference or update the info.96.247.71.106 (talk) 22:53, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

Third Largest

Cross-posted at Talk:Little Caesars/Archives/2015#Third Largest.

FYI, the articles on both Little Ceasars and Papa John's say that it is the 3rd largest pizza chain in America. DFS (talk) 23:00, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

Over five years later, and this is still the case.

Papa John's Pizza reads:

Papa John's Pizza is an American restaurant company. It runs the third largest take-out and pizza delivery restaurant chain in the world, with headquarters in Jeffersontown, Kentucky, a suburb of Louisville.

Little Caesars reads:

Little Caesars is the third largest pizza chain in the United States, behind Pizza Hut and Domino's Pizza.[1] The Little Caesars headquarters is located in the Fox Theatre building in Downtown Detroit, Michigan.[2]

Can someone resolve this discrepancy?

Regional type?

Does anyone know what "style" of pizza Papa John's serves? The article mentions that the "thin crust" variant is similar to St. Louis-style pizza but it doesn't specify the corresponding type of regular-crust pizza. Wikipedia has several articles on various kinds of pizza by region, but I'm no connoisseur and I have no idea what Papa John's is most like. A cursory Google search didn't turn up much in the way of specifics. Does anyone know the answer? A good description (or close approximation/comparison) would probably help readers that have limited experience with this particular food. *Vendetta* (whois talk edits) 02:27, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

The regular crust pizza doesn't really fit neatly into any of the US regional styles. It's similar to New York regular pizza in that Papa John's has a risen crust with a large proportion of the crust dough on the periphery of the pizza. This forms substantial balloons of crisp edge crust, but leaves the center crust (under the toppings) thin, and not generally substantial enough to support the "folding hold" that is the hallmark of New York style pizza. Due to the care taken not to burn the voluminous edge crust, the center crust doesn't have the heat and/or time to become crisp, as is described for Chicago thin or St. Louis style pizza. Papa John's CEO "not supportive of Obamacare"

CEO and founder John Schnatter has recently made a statement that his company is "not supportive of Obamacare", and will raise the price of pizzas if Obamacare is not repealed [2]. This is already causing ripples and talk (though I'm not sure this has been reported yet) of boycotting. We should at least keep an eye on this. Alfietucker (talk) 11:20, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

Map is inaccurate

According to the map, Papa John's has stores in Indonesia. According to the company's website, though, it does not. Josh (talk) 22:17, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

John H. Schnatter should be mentioned within the page somewhere

John H. Schnatter (born November 23, 1961), is the founder, and current CEO[4] of Papa John's International, Inc. He founded the company in October 1984.[5] He is also spokesman for Papa John's. See John Schnatter BytePytrate (talk) 14:53, 8 December 2012 (UTC) BYTE PYRATE

Papa John's PR guys are targeting journalists

"This week a public relations firm representing Papa John’s and Schnatter asked us to unpublish the story. The firm, Sitrick, claims that Schnatter’s now infamous remarks from last fall were taken out of context. It also admits that it’s spent the past several months asking those journalists who’ve reported on the matter to remove their coverage, and brags that “in virtually all of these cases, we have been dealing with responsible journalists who have done just that.” ... the PR firm claims that it “somehow missed the CNN story about which you wrote.” This despite the fact that CNN first aired the clip in August of last year, and has since become the most often cited proof that Schnatter’s claims of increased costs were dishonest…"

Map placement

I removed the map from near the top of the article. One, there was no purpose for its high placement that I could tell. Also, a large map image in that location appeared to go against regular article aesthetic expectations. Last, although I said the map lacked a reference, to be more specific, there are no citations in the article for it, although the map image links to a Papa John's website page which details the locations. Above, someone indicated there is a mismatch. If that is still the case, the map needs to be rectified. At any rate, the current location of the map seems to be the most reasonable in terms of size and context. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 17:37, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

Blame the Employees

The ACA section is limited. For a few weeks, not only did Papa Johns print receipts telling customers to take the ACA out of the delivery people's tips, but also over-estimated the amount the ACA cost Papa John's. This section seems to gloss over the really nefarious parts of the Papa Johns ACA scandal. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.222.143.109 (talk) 20:01, 18 April 2015 (UTC)

The problem is, although "Papa" John Schnatter acts like the world's biggest douchebag, Wikipedia is not allowed to make value judgments, so scumbags like Schnatter get away with the sort of mild and viewpoint free "criticism" we see here. Wikipedia has never been good with criticism, as editing often seems to be overwhelmed by fans of the subject of an article. For a more satisfying read, try Urban Dictionary or Uncyclopedia. Wages section, May 2015

The sole purpose of this section seems to be to highlight the fact that the highest ranking executive in the company earns more than the lowest ranking ones. First off, so what? This is true of virtually all big companies. Second, is this actually encyclopedic content or just a thinly veiled shot at the CEO? --Scalhotrod (Talk) ☮ღ☺ 18:33, 22 May 2015 (UTC)
