Beaux-Arts or Neo-classical?[edit]

I noted Shawn in Montreal's edit comment as to this looking more like Beaux-Arts....I'd have to agree, although it's a decidedly more restrained Beaux-Arts than, say, Grand Central in NYC. As I recall the old Great Northern Station, which stood next door (to the left in the photos, i.e. north) was very much Beaux-Arts; the comparison to Waterfront Station, the old CP station which is decidedly neo-classical and a small version of Toronto's Union Station, is very marked. I've added WP:Architecture to this article for hoped-for input from that department.Skookum1 (talk) 15:04, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Never looked for it before on the net, but delighted to find pics of the old Great Northern Station here and here, plus the note that because it was a joint Great Northern/Northern Pacific station it was called Union Station; so Union Station (Vancouver) could certainly use an article at some point. BTW I note that this was an American-owned station and reflective of dffernt architectural tastes - a bit more lavish in decor and design, intentionally opulent instead of intentionally restrained, as is the Canadian norm (similarly for Queen Anne which is less elaborate in BC than it is in WA, OR and CA....). As with the old Hotel Vancouver being torn down because the new Hotel Vancouver didn't want the competition, Union Station got to run down not just because of the collapse of train travel to/from the US but also because it made the Canadian National station llok drab; can't remember the politics of it, though that site has stayed vacant and bleak ever since.Skookum1 (talk) 15:11, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rocky Mountaineer[edit]

I noticed the article states that this is the Rocky Mountaineer's terminus. Don't they have their separate station? Yes, it is nearly right across the street, but I think it is a separate station. If anyone could verify, that would be great. Thank you. (Yours trully Railroader 96 06:28, 26 February 2013 (UTC)) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Railroader96 (talkcontribs)

Edit Needed[edit]

For Via Rail's Canadian Westbound service, it states "Abbotsford, Westbound service only terminating at Vancouver". Yet, after that it still says "Towards Toronto". Can someone please delete these two words as the westbound only service does not terminate at Toronto, but rather at Vancouver? Thanks.

The Canadian comes from the EAST! It does not go WEST "towards Vancouver."[edit]

Can someone PLEASE delete the "towards Vancouver" title next to the westbound service only information for the Canadian?! This has been an ongoing battle for sometine since both Via Rail Canadians come from the east and not going towards the west "towards Vancouver." Thanks.

I will have to agree with you on this, cardinal directions of travel should have senority over "preceding" and "following". Other examples of this longstanding format include Tampa Union Station, Brunswick Maine Street Station, Broken Hill railway station, Lincoln Street/Southwest 3rd Avenue station, and Abbotsford station, to name a few. I'm sorry... is there something I'm missing at Template:VIA Canadian? When it's coming from Abbotsford, it's WESTbound (since we're shouting) to Pacific Central. So the preceding station is Abbotsford and the following station is "none" i.e. terminus. When it's going to Mission Harbour, it's EASTbound from Pacific Central, so the preceding station is "none" i.e. terminus and the following station is Mission Harbour. left and right in these boxes do not equate to west and east, they equate to preceding and following stations in the service, which could be north/south, ne/sw, etc etc. The Abbotsford station entry is clearly wrong, since the following station from Abbotsford is Pacific Central, towards Vancouver, not Chilliwack (because it just came from Chilliwack). —Joeyconnick (talk) 00:09, 24 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'd recommend starting a discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Trains, since what you're suggesting affects thousands of articles that have been formatted west-east for simplicity, and because the vast majority of rail lines operate in both directions.
