Nationality 1[edit]

I would dispute Oliver Platt as a Canadian actor. He was born there and shares duel citizenship with the United States, but his father (an accomplished U.S. Ambassador) and mother are both American and he lived all over the world before college, which he attended in the United States, and where he currently resides.--TKE

Oliver Platt's father was in official diplomatic status in Canada as a representative of the United States when Oliver was born; as such, the child of an accredited diplomat by the terms of the Vienna Diplomatic Convention does not acquire citizenship of the birth country. Oliver is not, in fact, a Canadian -- unless he chose to acquire Canadian citizenship later in life. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.143.115.182 (talkcontribs) .

Right, then I'm removing the claim of Canadian. Teke 17:33, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I took out "Canadian" and I took out "American"...he is now just an actor. Fair enough?

I don't see why "American" should be removed. He definitely is, having been born to American parents, raised in the United States, living there at the moment, and possessing US citizenship. Being born in Canada was more or less an accident of birth, i.e. Martin Lawrence, the comedian, being born in Germany. Tell-Tale Ghost 07:19, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

THIS FEELS REALLY STUBBY. SOME1 UNSTUB IT. pleaseeeeeeeee —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.148.50.249 (talkcontribs)

Postcards From The Edge isn't listed. Obviously it should be. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.54.16.233 (talk) 04:36, 27 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Orson Welles[edit]

Oliver Platt is a distant relative of Orson Welles, yet this is mentioned nowhere in the article. Surely it is worth a mention.

Your link has a paywall but seems to be the only source with this claim. Orson Welles does have some living relatives like Jason Patric though--47.157.27.56 (talk) 18:22, 26 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nationality 2[edit]

Can we get some clarity on Platt's nationality? Editors keep alternating between Canadian/American/Canadian-American, etc... Thanks! DonIago (talk) 20:07, 25 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Born to American diplomats when they were assigned in Canada. The family returned to the US when he was 3 months old. He does not have Canadian citizenship or nationality because of his diplomat parents and is considered a natural born American by law. Same rule as for American military with kids born on foreign countries. Canadian birth is irrelevant to his notability so does not belong in lead at all per MOS:CONTEXTBIO. Thank you! DonIago (talk) 04:46, 8 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Just to add to that see article: "The birth in Canada of children of foreign representatives". The US has similar rules as do most countries with regard to children of diplomats born in their country. Also see #Nationality 1 on this page. Geraldo Perez (talk) 19:56, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
