Wine capital of Canada[edit]

14 November 2009 - I have inserted a number of links that refer to Oliver BC's branding "Wine Capital of Canada" I have not been able to edit some words in the header paragraph to make them neutral and accurate. My intent is to bring more information to the public. 'Bennest'

Um, Sumimasen. But I live in Oliver, and this is not a "self-proclamation". We are the wine capital of Canada as declared by Canada. Maybe sometime next week I'll go down Highway 97 and take a photo of our entrance sign saying "Wine capital of canada". Um, Trav1085, the title "Wine Capital of Canada" was entirely self-designated. No government agency "declared" Oliver to be the Wine Capital. If they did they'd be wrong, because the best and only popular Canadian wines come from the Niagra, Ontario area. While there are a few good wines produced near Oliver, the only thing that Oliver MIGHT be the "capital" of is faux "estate" wineries which were not ever "estates" before ten years ago. A bunch of people decided "let's put wineries in there" and suddenly there was the "golden mile." Then the same people who own these wineries and their friends decided "Let's call ourselves the Wine Capital of Canada." Oliver does NOT have 10,000 residents. They had 2,000 in 2008 and I doubt the population has grown five times over in four years. Also, to Sumimasen.... the "Wine Capital of Canada" designation is absolutely self-made. "Canada" did not declare Oliver the wine capital. Just because the town erected a welcome sign saying "wine capital of Canada" does not make it so. Also, putting 24 wineries in a town does not make it the wine capital either, nor does having the economic arm of Oliver registering winecapitalofcanada.com. BC Adventure is quoting Oliver tourism literature when it says it is "known as" the Wine Capital of Canada. Claims such as "Oliver is renowned for its high quality wine...the optimum conditions necessary to grow the preferred Vinifera wine grapes...growing high-quality grapes, as well as cherries, peaches and other soft fruits" really need verification; besides, the tone is far from neutral. History[edit]

Frank Venables isn’t apart of the details, and he was very important…… even more than John Oliver, he changed a lot of the geography and ways everyone started to work after ww1!
