A site near the cemetery was recently part of a controversy over land use and was being threatened with development, but apparently Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and Oregon State Parks Trust have bought the land in question:

This location is known by a large number of names. Of these, the 3 strongest contenders for the article title seem to be (in no special order):

Nez Perce Traditional Site, Wallowa Lake, as listed on the National Register of Historic Places
Wallowa Lake Site, as listed in the National Historic Landmark program
Old Chief Joseph Gravesite, as incorporated into the Nez Perce National Historical Park

The first of these, which is the current article title, smacks of bureaucratese and doesn't seem to be the way anyone actually refers to the site. The second seems to be a more high-profile name, corresponding to the NHLs being a more high-profile program than the NRHP. However, the third name is far and away the most used name for the location in all sources, including popular travel sites as well as more official sites. It is the only one of the three names that calls up links to academic libraries via a Google search. Thus the third name seems to be the one that meets the criteria of WP:COMMONNAME the best.

Therefore, I would like to move this article to Old Chief Joseph Gravesite. However, I'm aware there are important cultural issues at play here for the Nez Perce and other people, and I want to ask the community if I'm missing any land mines before I proceed. I am not sure if I'm fully tracking which site is which, and what's for the older vs. the younger Chief Joseph. But I thought the photo on this page of Gaston's Centennial History (public domain) might be of interest. -Pete Forsyth (talk) 21:28, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
