Settings[edit]

Can the settings by the following composers be considered "notable"?: Frank La Rocca, Mäntyjärvi, Morten Lauridsen, Alexina Louie, David Conte, Vytautas Miškinis or Ola Gjeilo. Perhaps some singers or choral music experts are familiar with their settings, or even heard of the composers outside Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.164.118.232 (talk) 23:21, 28 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

O magnum mysterium has been set by so many composers from the 16th century onwards that it appears bizarre that two modern settings – worthy as a they are, I'm sure – should have their own entries here. The Lauridsen already has its own page! And if the Paus setting is especially remarkable, it should be moved to his page.
Have a look at the cpdl list of settings – there are dozens.
I propose
1. Removing the two specific settings entries
2. Adding a paragraph on the frequency with which the text has been set, and mentioning some of the more significant composers from each era who have set it.

Looking further, it looks like the external links suffered a DOS attack by supporters of Lauridsen! We should narrow these down to some useful ones – maybe performances of key settings, but for sure IMSLP and CPDL links. Rconroy (talk) 11:32, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This seems pretty good to me. Thank you. DBaK (talk) 23:01, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Origin of the text[edit]

I would like to see origin of the text (when it's composed, by who, and also if the text used outside Roman rite) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.117.201.26 (talk) 13:50, 19 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Some info added. Its origins are, I'm afraid, a bit obscure…

Major revision[edit]

I took the plunge and did a bit of work on this page. I put in a bit of history (not a lot known, but a linked source to say to). I added some detail on the different texts of the versicles. The paragraphs on Lauridsen and Paus have been removed. In the case of Lauridsen, his composition has its own page and I've left a link to it. As for Paus, the paragraph repeated material from Paus' wikipedia page so again I reduced this to a link.

In their place I put an overview of the choral settings, focussing on the more notable composers. I linked the CPDL page that lists the fifty-odd settings they know about!

I am no expert in this field (or any other) but what you have done certainly works for me. With best wishes, DBaK (talk) 23:05, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Rconroy, @DisillusionedBitterAndKnackered: I've made some further changes, in particular I've tried to combat the external link problem noted in the maintenance template. Rconroy, I've removed your link to CDPL from the "Text" section because per WP:EL such links should usually only be in the "External links" section. Comments welcome. Excellent! The page is looking really spiffy in time for Christmas matins!!
