Observations[edit]

GA review (see here for what the criteria are, and here for what they are not)
   HTML document size: 440 kB
Prose size (including all HTML code): 66 kB
References (including all HTML code): 176 kB
   Wiki text: 95 kB
Prose size (text only): 35 kB (5694 words) "readable prose size"
   References (text only): 18 kB
  1. It is reasonably well written.
a (prose, spelling, and grammar): b (MoS for lead, layout, word choice, fiction, and lists):
  • In the lead, drop links to pen name, mineralogy, Hymns to the Night, Athenaeum, tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis, fragment. (Hymns is linked extensively in writings.)(First link to Athenaeum is in Freiberg: The Mining Academy)
  • Links deleted. Hymns linked once in lead and first time in main article. In Writings, links are to the particular works. Overlinks to August Schlegel and Schleiermacher removed too. Green tickY
  • Birth and early background: remove link to rhetoric;
  • Link deleted. Green tickY
  • Jena, Leipzig, Wittenberg: Legal Studies: remove link to law in the first sentence.
  • Link deleted. Green tickY
  • Freiberg: The Mining Academy: drop link to galvanism, alchemy, industrialisation.
  • Link deleted. Green tickY
  • In 1798, Novalis's "fragments" → linking to fragments here is confusing; it appears you are linking to the document. If this is a document (apparently) then consider dropping that link and italicizing the text as per other text references.
  • Removed quotation marks and link. Fragment is already defined earlier, so this should just stand as a word. Green tickY
  • As romantic poet: Reading reference 45 is not clear that MacDonald defined Novalis like so: also understood him as a poet of mystic desire. That particular reference has MacDonald consider Novalis a mystic poet. Consider. (Mystic desire is not a common term, nor is it theologically defined.)
  • Changed to mystic poet. Green tickY
  • Magical idealism: Linking to immanence is confusing as the subject is health, and not the immanence of divinity which this article is (mostly) about. Consider.
  • link removed. Green tickY
  • Religious views: drop the link to hymnals, Medieval, Catholic Church, logos, cosmopolitan.
  • removed hymnal, Medieval, Catholic Church. Would like to keep logos, as it refers to the neoplatonist version of the concept (e.g., Hemsterhuis's use). Similarly, the link to cosmopolitanism distinguishes the philosophical concept of this article from the ordinary, though closely related regular meaning of the word. Green tickY
  • Upon examining reference [2]: 46–47 , I do not find any claim or statement that Novalis was Pietist all his life and up to his death. Consider this claim suspect and unfounded.
  • Agreed, sentence deleted. Just mentions him reading Zinzendorf, whose roots are in Pietism, but he mentions Boehme as well, whose system is something different. Green tickY
  • Political writings: we may drop the links to Prussia, Christendom. Green tickY
  • Links deleted.
  1. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
a (reference section): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR): d (copyvio and plagiarism):
  1. It is broad in its coverage.
    a (major aspects): b (focused):
  • Good work in the Writings section with links to Novalis's works: Poetry, Unifinished novels and Fragments
  • In Political Writings, there is a telling comment from Frederick Wilhelm III about the impossibly high standards.
  • Stoljar gives an interesting overview of magical idealism;
  • The Influence section is well curated with plentiful sources and references to Novalis.
  • It is challenging to deconstruct an author who used poetry to develop philosophy. However, this is carried off well in this article.
  1. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
    Fair representation without bias:
  • NPOV is preserved in this article.
  1. It is stable.
    No edit wars, etc.:
  • Page created 23 April 2003 - a very old page.
  • Page has 1,267 edits by 357 editors
  • Cluebot NG has not been on the page, suggesting there has been nil vandalism

  1. Overall:
  • This is an old page, and it has gone in many directions, considering the Talk page. The hand of many editors over the years is apparent.
  • Yes, I've done what I could to integrate this into a relatively continuous narrative, but keeping most of the verifiable contributions. This was a challenge at times. Green tickY
  • There is some overlinking; fragments and immanent can have some clarity.
  • Most overlinking should be addressed. Fragments left as a word, as it is already defined previously in article. Immanent is contextually appropriate, but link removed as misleading. Green tickY
  • I would like to see some clarity around the claim that he was a Pietist all his life.
  • This was deleted. Perhaps it could be stated he kept his family's commitment to Zizendorf, but this is already implied in his brother's testimony. Green tickY
  • With attention to these minor matters, the article will pass to GA. --Whiteguru (talk) 04:36, 27 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thank you for taking the time with this article, Whiteguru. I hope this addresses your major concerns. If not, please let me know!
  • @Wtfiv: I thank you kindly for your initiative here. As seen, this page began life in 2003 and has passed through both translation and editors. A good result.
