General Points[edit]

I believe that this series is significant because - working from memory here - it was the first dramatic series ever broadcast completely in color on a major network. There is likely sourcing for this out there, so I'll be looking.

Also, though Keith Larsen is given a Wikilink, no article exists for him yet - and I'd like to see or develop one because he was a significant B movie/TV series actor (sad to see he died two years ago).

Finally, my revision to the opening paragraph is necessary but not yet complete. The series derives its name from the very popular novel and even more popular movie - arguably following the movie more, since that Spencer Tracy vehicle truncates the novel at mid point, completely changes the romance in the plot, and generally does the kind of hatchet job on the book common to 1930s films. However - the film does at least attempt to justify the title by almost randomly having Rogers go traipsing off to find the fabled passageway at the end - something he is never able to do in the novel, to his abiding frustration leading to his destruction. The series may have made an oblique reference to Rogers' dream of finding the passage (via North American rivers, BTW, as opposed to the Arctic routes being explored then and later) early on - but the average viewer tuning in to any of those other 25 episodes would wonder what the relevance of the title was at all without prior familiarity with novel or movie. Added movie section to article[edit]

Last week I watched two movies on TCM which were clearly combined episodes of this TV show. I felt it would be a worth-while addition to the article to mention the show was "recyled" as theater movies.--Karenthewriter (talk) 18:51, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
