Northumbrian Small Pipes Society.[edit]

This new page covers a short but important part of the history of the Northumbrian smallpipes, postdating the publication of the Northumbrian Minstrelsy, but well before the foundation of the Northumbrian Pipers' Society. The competitions were won by Old Tom Clough and Richard Mowat, both of whom have articles of their own. The tutor was significant, in that no tutor for the instrument had previously been published, and it included versions of tunes thought to be appropriate for a learner. I have added suitable references, as well as relating the Society's work to the earlier work of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne, and later activities of the Northumbrian Pipers' Society.

I have added a tentative paragraph on the reasons for the Society's failure.
