Draft notes[edit]

Cool. I like it broken down by historic, subculture, etc. Postoak 03:55, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Where does "'Bagdad' on the Bayou' come from? Bayou from the bayous (as in Bayou City), but what about Bagdad? --Evb-wiki 06:23, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'll have to research this one. I googled it and it appears to have been used around the 40 -60's. I suppose Baghdad was a large, somewhat lawless city? I can move back to where it was. Postoak 06:34, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The wiki-links for a lot of these redirect to Houston, Texas (e.g., Space City, Bayou City, Magnolia City, Oil Capital of the World, Clutch City). H-Town pipes to a disamb page, which suggests Houston has dibs (+ H-Town (band) is from Houston). I'm not sure what to do with this info. I found it interesting. Just fyi, I guess. --Evb-wiki 20:47, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm at a loss for HTX and Heart of Conservative America. --Evb-wiki 02:41, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I cannot find anything that links those two to Houston either. Postoak 02:55, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Do you think H-Town has anything to do with the H-Town Arena Theater? Postoak 03:55, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I dont know. H-Town Arena Theatre opened in the 70’s. [1] It's kinda like the ckicken-and-egg thing. Most likely, though, H-Town is simply a contraction of Houston. I've seen it spelled H'Town, too. --Evb-wiki 04:20, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think this article is ready to move, what do you think? Should I call it Nicknames of Houston, Texas? Postoak 04:23, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I believe it's ready, and that's what I'd call it. Go ahead and launch it. --Evb-wiki 05:15, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I tried to move the page, but it wouldn't go. The talk page moved instead, so maybe you can't move between namespaces. So I copied it over. Postoak 05:30, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's all good now. Done and done. BTW - check out C.S. Bayou City. I ran across the info from the US Navel History webpage. Something interesting I didn't know. --Evb-wiki 05:34, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That is interesting, I wonder if she sailed in the bay? Postoak 05:41, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Slang, Urban Dictionary & Consensus[edit]

While I understand the desire to purge Wikipedia of Urban Dictionary references, the subject matter of this article should allow for some leaway in source quality. By nature, nicknames are often slang. That, and considering the lengthy discussions regarding the nicknames of Houston and their inclusion in the main Houston article, the "at least there is a source" standard may be more appropriate here than a Draconian standard. --Evb-wiki 13:55, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. At least the sources for "urban dictonary" could have been removed and replaced with a "cite" tag instead of removing content. Postoak 17:36, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's what pissed me off. He could have requested better refs. instead of just removing them, and the text with them. There are plenty of articles (even WP:BLPs) without any references at all. And an admin at that. (Insert personal attack here.) Anyway.... --Evb-wiki 02:50, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Grrrrrrr[edit]

Now I am really conflicted. I am generally and consistently an anti-list editor. I appreciate the recognition of the featured-list nomination, in so much as it suggest a certain level of encyclopedic value, but I (for one) have made a real effort to keep this source of Houston nicknames an article containing real context. It may "inherently" be a list, but it is also an article containing more real context than just about any list on Wikipedia. Again, grrrrr. --Evb-wiki (talk) 04:09, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

For the record, I nominated this article as a featured list because I thought (and still think) that it is a shining example of what some other Wikipedia lists could aspire to become. Whether or not it receives the "featured list" designation, Houston contributors deserve to be proud of it. --Orlady (talk) 21:32, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Refs[edit]

What else is there?? :) Postoak (talk) 02:39, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Slime . . . " city[edit]

I again reverted someone's inclusion of "Slime-in-the-ice-machine City" as a nickname for Houston. The YouTube videos provided as reference for the inclusion show Marvin Zindler, but do not support the use of his famous phrase as a nickname. --Evb-wiki (talk) 20:38, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, doesn't belong. Postoak (talk) 23:57, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

undiscussed move[edit]

This article was moved without discussion. I object. Will someone please move it back. Consensus should be sought before unilateral move. --Evb-wiki (talk) 21:47, 25 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Again, I assert this is clearly a substantive article, NOT a list. --Evb-wiki (talk) 21:55, 25 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
