Request move / rename[edit]

The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: No move to Niagara Falls (New York) Public Library; no consensus to move to another name. Additionally, a move won't really solve the Google problem, as Niagara Falls Public Library would still redirect to the new name, at least until articles are created for the Ontario library and/or the New York city's new library (or system). Niagara Falls Public LibraryNiagara Falls (New York) Public Library – Could this article be renamed to "Niagara Falls (New York) Public Library". Perhaps a disambig page at "Niagara Falls Public Library" and rename this article to "Niagara Falls (New York) Public Library", and redlink to "Niagara Falls (Ontario) Public Library" until such time as that page is created.

Google is merging the details of this entry with details about the Niagara Falls (Ontario) Public Library in their search results. They are two completely separate institutions in different countries.

Also, the image in this article (Ontario Southern Railway) came from Niagara Falls Ontario Public Library, not NFNY, it does not belong on this page. Cmd00 (talk) 18:19, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose; we are not responsible for Google's algorithms. Even if we were to create an article on the Ontario library (is there one?), the disambiguator for both articles should go at the end of the title. Powers T 20:38, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • Google screwed up because the data in this article is wrong. I did not ask for a new page for the Ontario library, just a rename of this or a disambig to clarify that the U.S. is not the entire world. Yes there is one in Ontario (took 2 seconds to check, not to mention, I stated it in my note).
      • The data in this article are not wrong. What's wrong about it? Powers T 23:47, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. We should not do massive page moves every time Google changes its search algorithms. Furthermore, no separate article on the Ontario library currently exists, so disambiguation is unnecessary at this time. Zzyzx11 (talk) 21:27, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • How is this "massive"?

I apologize for attempting to increase the precision of the data in Wikipedia so that others who rely upon it (e.g. google) are not misled. I will not attempt to do so again. I was hesitant to make a suggestion, not being part of the Wiki Cabal, and I've learned my lesson. Cmd00 (talk) 23:47, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you're going to react passive-aggressively every time someone disagrees with you, you're going to have a hard time contributing. There is no cabal. Powers T 23:47, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: This is probably all true but unhelpful IMO. May I point out that this contributor is a newcomer to Wikipedia? If we assume (as we tend to, particularly at RM) that every contributor is an old hand, then that will probably become true too. And Wikipedia will die with us. Agree - I agree to the renaming proposal by User:Wbm1058.--Pubdog (talk) 01:27, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename to Carnegie Library (Niagara Falls, New York). While the current name appears in the National Register, it isn't ideal because it is properly the name of the organization formerly housed here, not the name of the building that is the subject of the article. This proposed new name is good because it is consistent with the local (WP:COMMON) usage indicated on the public library website and it provides disambiguatory location information in parentheses, consistent with the usual practice in Wikipedia. --Orlady (talk) 17:04, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename. The page in question is quite specifically about one building, whereas the title is about either of two organisations. I feel that there need to be three pages at the end of this process, with the possibility of moving the contents of the current page into a section of one of the other two at a later stage. I feel that the unsigned suggestion of Carnegie Library (Niagara Falls, New York) is good for the current page & Cmd00's suggestion of Niagara Falls (New York) Public Library and Niagara Falls (Ontario) Public Library are good & clear for the other two, although 'New York' could possibly be 'New York State'. I think that each could usefully have a "See also" section pointing to the other two.
  • Comment. In answer to Powers & Zzyzx11. Whilst Wikipedia is not responsible for Google, Google are presenting Wikipedia with Wikipedia users looking for accurate information. The current page does not fulfill that demand, therefore Wikipedia is in error & needs to be corrected. The current page presents an outdated subset of one of two pieces of information that the Google user is likely to be trying to find, which presents Wikipedia (not Google) in a bad light.
    • Yes, I am aware that this is probably deserving of a WP:BITE tag, but as an irregular editor I feel the need for a pre-emptive strike, sorry --Alanthehat (talk) 08:08, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per common name. I'm also uncertain where the rename to Carnegie Library is coming from. The library pages that I can see ([1], [2]) don't use that name. Perhaps the library is called the Carnegie Library but that doesn't seem to be the common name. --regentspark (comment) 01:21, 25 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Commment. regentspark, there are two problems, 1, the text of the article is about the building Carnegie Library & 2, the title is about the two different organisations Niagara Falls Public Library --Alanthehat (talk) 09:50, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move[edit]

I recently created the following two articles and one disambiguation page:

We need to move the disambiguation page to the plain title, necessitating a move of this article to a new title. Note that there is no WP:PRIMARYTOPIC here. The only suggestion for the new target from the previous discussion was Carnegie Library (Niagara Falls, New York), but that was rejected. I propose a move to Niagara Falls Carnegie Library (New York) (there is also one in Ontario which does not yet have an article), though I don't think it's optimal; I welcome better suggestions. Request Merge of Articles[edit]

There are two articles about Niagara Falls Public Library. This page and Niagara Falls Public Library (New York) which has very little info. The two pages are redundant and we should either delete one or merge them together if that's possible.
