Leffman (Louis) Rose (1807-1888) grew up in Neuhaus-an-der-Oste. He later immigrated to the United States living in Louisiana and Texas, before settling in 1850 in San Diego, California. In that city, the section of Roseville and Rose Canyon are named for him. He was a member of the city board of trustees and the first San Diego County Board of Supervisors. He owned many businesses including a tannery, butcher shop, hotel, saloon, and general store. He was one of the leading advocates in the unsuccessful effort to make San Diego the terminus of a transcontinental railroad.
