A note

Does anybody know the location for the Dog and Duck pub in which Colin stayed? Is it a real pub? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.169.68.100 (talk) 12:59, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

(Wow over 2 years later..) The name of the pub used during filming is (now) called The Blackwood Arms. Looking at their website, it says Marilyn Monroe popped in so I assume/hope they mean the real one.

Real Dog and Duck is on the Oxford Road near Denham roundabout.[1] Now an Indian Restaurant.[2] Advb (talk) 16:08, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

Accolades

The accolades should be written into a table. I don't have the time to do it right now but I'm willing to do it later ;) - Sofffie7 (talk) 19:50, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

I don't think they have to be, but I've already done one just incase. - JuneGloom Talk 20:42, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
Just read this, which says "if the film is critically acclaimed and has many accolades, they can be listed in a wikitable." I don't really think 16 is "many" at the moment (though what is "many" supposed to mean? 20? 30? 40?). The annoying thing is if the film does gather more nominations and the list is moved to a separate article, I'll still have to write some prose for the accolades section in this article. - JuneGloom Talk 02:37, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

Biographical film

I think this film is based on Colin Clark's memoirs and realistic portrayals of Marilyn Monroe in 1956 [1]

Genre

Yesterday the genre of the film was changed from drama to biographical. One source was provided, which stated the film is a biopic. However, I believe there are more sources out there stating the film is a drama. I found an article from The Economist that states the film is not a biopic ([3]). Google gives me 3,500,000 results for drama and 1,730,000 results for biographical. Also, iTunes has placed the film in the drama category ([4]), as has The Guardian ([5]) and Rotten Tomatoes ([6]). I'd really like a consensus about the genre to be formed to avoid any dispute. - JuneGloom Talk 14:34, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

How about "biographical drama film"? --Rob Sinden (talk) 14:59, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
That could work, though does it make the lead sound awkward? "My Week with Marilyn is a 2011 British biographical drama film..." - JuneGloom Talk 16:06, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

I don't believe films that are almost certainly fictional should be labeled as biographical. When this film came out it got some acclaim, no doubt, but not because it was believed it to be a true story. I'm surprised the article doesn't cover this. Calling it "biographical" gives it the stamp of authenticity, especially if there's no mention of how unlikely the story is.

As a side issue, despite repeated claims in the media, the original author apparently never had any actual assistant director credits on any film, including The Prince and the Showgirl. He was probably a personal assistant on that film (why that wasn't good enough for the press I don't know), and came up with this story later, when there was no one around to dispute it. - Gothicfilm (talk) 17:01, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

You make an excellent point, thank you. There are probably a few things missing, but I'm sure I'll get round to sorting/adding them eventually when I take the article to GAN. - JuneGloom Talk 17:29, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
I might be missing a point here, but is this film not based on diaries written by Colin Clark? Has it been debunked as a fake? If not, then we have to assume that it is based on the autobiographical diaries of Colin Clark, and thus a biographical film. --Rob Sinden (talk) 20:27, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

Not much comment here. But as JuneGloom said at the top of this section, more sources called this a drama, and that's how it was listed for months. Plus a bio, fictional or not, covers a person's life, not just a week of it. - Gothicfilm (talk) 22:50, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

So Schindler's List is not a biopic because it only covers the time Schindler saved the jews, or Milk not a biopic because it just showed Harvey Milk's political years? 189.18.208.194 (talk) 00:09, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
Schindler's List is not a biopic, no. Putting "biographical film" in its lead would be inaccurate. "True life drama" would be more like it. Not every true story is a biopic, or the term would be rendered useless. Milk covered enough of his life I wouldn't object to calling it a biopic. - Gothicfilm (talk) 02:19, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
w/r/t "Plus a bio, fictional or not, covers a person's life, not just a week of it.": 127 Hours. Also, My Week with Marilyn remains on List_of_biographical_films#2010s and is included in (or itself includes) Category:Biographical_films_about_actors. 98.228.54.208 (talk) 10:23, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

No further comment here. One week does not make a biopic. One can debate whether it's fictional, either way it is indisputably a drama film, so it's best to call it that. I've restored it. - Gothicfilm (talk) 00:22, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Gothicfilm, many films which cover a short period of life are considered biopics, if John McClane and Hans Gruber and the events of Die Hard 1 happened in real life, DH would be a biopic of them. Anyway I bring some sources [1][2][3];

Some sources I've found so far on google, good to add is that MWWM has been seen as a very realistic portrayal of what happened in real life. StarShopSTX (talk) 01:07, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

Die Hard would be a biopic if it really happened? That's absurd. One week in a life is not a bio, even if some writers may have misused the term. Most called it a drama. And your statement this film has been seen as a very realistic portrayal of what happened in real life is outlandish. It's almost certainly fictional. Even the often-repeated claim that Colin Clark was an assistant director on The Prince and the Showgirl is false. This one guy met Olivier and Monroe, had a minor job as a personal assistant, and then, years after Olivier and Monroe had both died, he comes out with this story - with no one left alive to dispute it. It's an obvious male fantasy. Some people found it a well told story, but that does not make it factual. And most found the story mediocre - the acclaim was for Michelle Williams' performance. As I said before, this is indisputably a drama film, so it's best to call it that. - Gothicfilm (talk) 01:42, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

First or last names in plot section?

An editor revised the plot section replacing the character's first names with their surnames. To me, it seems kinda odd that Colin Clark is referred to as Clark throughout. If I remember correctly, Colin is the common name used in the film and I think the others are also referred to by their first names, with Olivier the exception. I had a look at some other plot sections from a couple of similar films (Becoming Jane, The Iron Lady) and they use either first names or a mixture. I also found this WT:FILM discussion. Is there a consensus as to whether first names or surnames are preferred in the plot? - JuneGloom Talk 17:14, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
