Good Article nomination has failed

The Good article nomination for Music of Dominica/Archive 1 has failed, for the following reason:

The article lacks a proper lead-in. The introduction is kind of abrupt. It has too many redlinks, consider creating short stubs of these redlinks. Also the complete lack of pictures is a factor. Please add some pictures of the musical instruments, local music being played & maybe some sound samples of the music. Although the article does have good inline citations & references provided. I feel it has a good potential to be a GA & maybe even an FA. Good Luck.

I agree the lead was in poor shape, and have retooled it. I've already filled in as many redlinks as I can without making a bunch of probably deletable substubs, and I have had no luck finding useful images or sound samples. Redlinks, images and music samples are not requisite, according to Wikipedia:What is a good article?. Tuf-Kat 14:40, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

The lead-in looks much better now. As for the redlinks, Wikipedia:What is a good article? Section 1 (d) says that "necessary technical terms or jargon are briefly explained in the article itself, or an active link is provided." So if you feel the redlink is too insignificant to be an article you can, removing the wikilink & adding a small description beside it can be a good option. Also if a redlink has a citation then a stub article can be created as a reliably referenced articles aren't likely to get a nom for deletion. If it fits neither criterion, you can remove the wikilink & simply italicize the term. As for the images, though not a requirement, make an article more interesting to view than reading a block of text. If you are from Dominica, I suppose you could probably get some of the media yourself, otherwise you could place a request at Talk:Dominica or search for it at Wikipedia Commons or Flicr creative commons or any such commons site. Although this all is not a rigid requirement. A few improvements later, the article might just meet the GA criterion. Thanks Srikeit^{(talk ¦ ✉)} 17:57, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Most of the redlinks are performers who are probably notable enough for an article. However, I don't have more information on them than what is contained here; they probably all meet WP:MUSIC (actually, I'm certain most of them do, if not all), but I could not provide verifiable sources for that. All the redlinks are already described as much as is necessary for this article; eventually, someone with access to specialized resources will become a Wikipedian and write articles on these people. Until then, a redlink harms no one -- they're not considered actionable at WP:FAC and I don't see they should be considered for WP:GAN. I've searched long and hard for images and sound samples -- there's nothing at the commons, nothing on Flickr or anywhere else. There are relatively few recordings extant, and I do not have access to any of them, nor have I had any luck finding any downloadable somewhere. Tuf-Kat 18:33, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Carnival in Dominica

Excellent article. However, you say:

  After a fire in 1963, the Carnival was shut down

This makes it sound like there was no carnival in Dominica after 1963, which is not the case. As I understand it, up until 1963 Dominica had distinct carnival traditions, including sensay (sp?) which were highly flammable costumes made out of rope. These were banned after some unpleasant incidents in 1963. Since then, carnival has taken a more Trinidadian form, with mas bands, calypso competitions etc., although the out-of-town carnival still follows older traditions.

Now this is all original research so can't go in the article, but I think the phrase "shut down" should be replaced with something a bit less final. James Fryer 13:03, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

Replaced shut down with "banned", which is what's used in the source. I also clarified what occurred as best I could. "Traditional Carnival" was banned, but calypso and steelpan "overtook the older genres" quickly. I guess the implication is that "traditional Carnival" was replaced by a more Trinidadian Carnival as you suggest, though my source doesn't say that explicitly. It's somewhat vague now, but I'll see if I can find a source about modern Carnival on Dominica. Tuf-Kat 22:59, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

GA promotion
