Kc012345 Disclosing COI and intention to edit[edit]
Hi!
A colleague and I are interested in adding and updating information on this page to represent the system more accurately. For full disclosure, we have both worked on the MovieLens system as undergraduate researchers, and understand that this might be considered a conflict of interest. Thus, we are proceeding cautiously. Our interest in editing was prompted by an assignment for a course at University of Minnesota. However, the reason we chose this page is because the information on this page is outdated, and we believe our knowledge of the system would be useful in improving the information. We are aware of the conflict of interest policy, but we believe the edits we intend to make will be substantive and uncontroversial. Please let us know if you disagree, we'd be happy to discuss. We'll wait a while before making the edits, so anyone interested has a chance to see this and let us know. We are also new to editing Wikipedia, so any general advice would also be welcome.
Our proposed edits:
- We noticed that there is more information about the history of MovieLens and the people that were involved in its early stages on the GroupLens Wikipedia page. We intend to copy or move some of this information to the MovieLens page because it would be more relevant here.
- The recommendations section is no longer accurate in that it only describes user-user collaborative filtering, does not link to the collaborative filtering page, and does not mention other recommendation algorithms used by the site, including item-item collaborative filtering and FunkSVD. We would like to correct this, as well as provide links to the Wikipedia pages for the item-item collaborative filtering and FunkSVD algorithms. We would also like to add references [1][2][3] indicated below related to the algorithms used.
- The reception section is also very outdated (the information is from 2000). We would like to summarize and link to reference [4] below, which describes how Solution by Simulation used MovieLens ratings data to predict to Oscars.
References we intend to use: [1][2][3][4]. In the interest of discussing any potential conflict of interest, [1][2][3] were written by people from the GroupLens lab, but my colleague and I were not part of that work.
