Screwy nomenclature[edit]

There is something strange going on with the nomenclature here at Babaco, and I'm having trouble figuring it out (the botanical literature in TROPICOS isn't helping). Babaco has a link at Vasconcellea cundinamarcensis which redirects to this page. The scientific name of Babaco follows Badillo. Here, Badillo's Vasconcellea cundinamarcensis is presented here as a synonym (replacement) for V. pubescens A DC. There is also Carica pubescens Linne & K. Koch; was that epithet published in Vasconcellea prior to DeCandolle? I'm not sure whether Badillo's cundamarcensis is really needed as replacement name. TROPICOS suggests that Linne & Koch's name is still a synonym for the other names. It would seem to have priority if V. pubescens DC is the same thing, in which case cundamarcensis isn't needed.Plantdrew (talk) 03:58, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't clearly understand the problem (language, time of day...) but in similar cases i like the site: http://www.theplantlist.org/ They list the accepted names and synonyms. --Wer?Du?! (talk) 23:04, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Major Additions (November 2021)[edit]

In the context of a course on Alternative Crops, as a group we would like to enrich this Wikipedia page. We propose the addition of other relevant sections as well as a more detailed "Description" and "Cultivation" section.

To see how the page would look like with our additions, please visit my Sandbox: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:VanderLooEnrico/sandbox

We structured the main sections in the following order: "Description", "Breeding & Cultivars", "Cultivation", "Uses", "Nutrition", "History", "Invasiveness".

We added some more information about the plant in the "Description" section that better describes the plant, its characteristics (for example its sexuality) as this is missing.

In the "Cultivation" section we propose information on how to grow it, what conditions the plant needs, how to propagate it, how to harvest/process it and its pests & diseases in different subsections. We also propose to move what is currently written under "Cultivation" under a new section called "Breeding & Cultivars" with some additional information that is relevant for breeding. We did this because this plant has a lot of potential for breeding with other mountain papayas or even the common papaya (carica papaya) and therefore deserves a section of its own. Because of this relevance we decided to put this section before "Cultivation", after the "Description" section.

We then propose a section on the "Uses" of this plant with 3 subsections: Culinary Uses, Commercial Use, Medicinal Uses. This sections show what this plant can be used for, and therefore is very relevant for its Wikipedia page.

The next section we deem relevant is a section on "Nutrition", which is very relevant as it is an edible plant.

The last 2 sections we would like to add are "History" and "Invasiveness". "History" briefly covers some information we know on the past of this plant. The "Invasiveness" section is important because this plant has been introduced for example in New Zealand and established itself and this can become an issue as invasive species generally are problematic, and this is something to keep in mind if we want to grow it in other regions of the world.

Finally, we added 2 images from Wikipedia Commons, one showing what the flowers of the plant looks like, and the other illustrating a woman selling the fruits of this plant showing the importance of this crop in certain regions of South America. We also included all our references formatted as per the Wikipedia guidelines.

We are looking forward to what the Wikipedia community thinks about this edit and we would gladly work with the community to enrich this specific page! VanderLooEnrico (talk) 16:42, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
