Billy Boy arrangment[edit]

The "arranged by Ahmad Jamal" credit is confusing for a couple of reasons, though clearly the Milestones arrangement owes a huge debt to Jamal's 1955 and 1958 recordings. Firstly, an average reader would assume Jamal had some formal involvement with the Davis album, as arranger credits usually mean the arranger sold or gave an arrangement to the recording artist. Secondly, Miles' rhythm section didn't reproduce Jamal's arrangement verbatim. The Miles version discarded the opening statement of the melody by the bass (present in both Jamal versions), and added a brand new piano vamp as the opening. Philly Joe's percussion added crucial rhythmic parts to the Miles version not present in Ahmad's arrangement. The Miles version steals or borrows quite a lot from Jamal--this is no argument for saying it's original. A credit like "arrangement based on Ahmad Jamal Trio arrangement" would convey the debt and avoid the confusion of the more literal credit the page currently has.

Untitled[edit]

Tracks #1 and #4 are respectively and definitely "Dr. Jekyll" and "Miles", not "Dr. Jackle" and "Milestones". However, it's unclear to me whether I may fix these mistakes, as the history shows they have already been corrected then reintroduced several times. Vandalism? Or wrong CBS data?--Cedesguin (talk) 10:11, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Edit[edit]

I own both Columbia mono and stereo releases. In the mono edition tracks #1 and #4 are respectively titled "Dr. Jeckyll" and "Miles". In the stereo edition they are titled "Dr. Jackle" and "Milestones". The track #8 (alternate take) is also titled "Milestones".--Cedesguin (talk) 10:55, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
