Dispute[edit]

The only reference I see to this "Martian" character is this one:

In the year 449, Martian being made emperor with Valentinian, reigned seven years; in whose time the English, being called by the Britons, came into Britain.[1]

It's from an Eclesiastical history of Britain, dated between 673 and 735, and seems to be innacurate on other points (e.g. here[2] is a suggestion that the Emperor in 189 was Severus, whereas according to the information we have here Severus did not come to power until 193).

A few web sites mention him, but those that refer to original sources refer back to the same source. One of them [3] appears to be the original source for this stub article, as the phrasing is identical.

I suspect Bede was under some misapprehension when he wrote this. JulesH 11:02, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
