Steam-related categories[edit]

I've just added Category:Steam road vehicles and Category:Preserved steam engines, to ensure that the article is included in the cat. hierarchies for both 'steam power' and 'preserved steam'. I agree that neither is very accurate, however they are at this time the best available: "Steam road vehicles", by necessity, has to cover all non-stationary land-based applications; "Preserved steam engines" is a relatively new and under-populated category.

Of course, you are more than welcome to write lots more steam-related articles to fill out the categories...! :o)

Per my edit summary, I am putting this here so someone might be able to find sourcing for it and reword it to include in the article:

Additional information on the Panama Canal connection: According to the newspaper article this shovel was purchased in 1906, and its possible a second one was added in 1911. The Panama Canal Commision documents themselves state that the 17 Model 91 shovels there started work in 1910, and the surviving 16 (one was destroyed in a landslide) were sold off in a single lot to a quarry owner in Ohio in 1914 after the canal construction was completed. These dates would disprove the old General Crushed Stone story of this shovel having worked on the canal, since it predates the canal construction. The stories were first reported decades later by the next generation of company managers. It is likely that they confused the talk of 'this is the same kind that was used on the canal' to 'this was used on the canal'. Regardless, it is significant to have the last remaining Model 91 still in existence.
