Pink Floyd played on 1st November 1969 at the Main Debating Hall (now the Academy 2). Sven945 (talk) 16:36, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And an excellent concert it was too, however, it wasn't at The Academy, which didn't exist then, it was at The University of Manchester University Students Union rag ball, so are these gigs from 40 years ago really relevant to an article about The Academy? Also the criticism of the building not being finished on time is totally irrelevant as it's now been sorted out and most buildings have problems when they're first opened. I take your point. The reason they are in the article is because Manchester Academy has gone from being the name of a venue owned, operated and situated next door to The University of Manchester Students' Union, to taking on the role of the generic operational name for all of the concert venues and concert operations undertaken by the SU. In this context, it is slightly like the numerous Wikipedia articles that refer to the undertakings of their defunct parent organisations or histories of organisations that have changed their name. As such this article should be seen as being about the SU concerts under the Manchester Academy 'brand' rather than the single venue.
There is an argument that this should be in the afore-cited UMSU article, but given that concentrates on the Students' Union aspect whereas this article concentrates on the concert-hosting aspect of the operation, there is also the argument that those references are more valid here.
But I see where you are coming from. Pehaps we should move this to the GM wikiproject talkpage to get more of a consensus? -- Fursday 22:34, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Academy 1 Refurbishment[edit]

How come the introduction states that it is due to be finished in early 2008 when later on it states that the refurbishment was completed in October 2008? 86.29.234.46 (talk) —Preceding undated comment was added at 01:06, 5 October 2008 (UTC).[reply]
