Proposed merger[edit]

I propose that the articles Makrygialos and Makrys Gialos should be merged. The articles clearly cover the same general locality, although Makrys Gialos focuses on the area (municipality) and Makrygialos on the modern resort and, particularly, the archaeological site. There is also a clear need to make the two texts compatible - for example, Makrys Gialos states that the archeological sites "are not of great importance", while Makrygialos sets out substantial information on the Minoan site. Discussion on article merger and name, August 2009[edit]

Re: Makry Gialos and Makriyialos. These two articles have been up for merger for a long time. What do you think? My view is that they should be merged. Ghmyrtle (talk) 20:17, 25 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I had missed that one, I thought there were only two articles about the same place, not three. If you want to merge them, go ahead. Markussep Talk 21:07, 25 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I will merge them - the text at Makriyialos seems to be taken from the longer article anyway - but before I do, what are your views on the name of the article itself? The location is quite well known among UK-based tourism operators, who tend to use either Makrigialos [1][2][3][4] or (less often) Makriyialos [5][6]. The references to the archaeological site tend to be to Makriyialos. The form Makry Gialos seems to be used mainly on sites hosted in Greece, such as [7] (which states "You also can find in books and maps different spellings of the name like; Makrigialos, Makrygialos, Makri Gialos, Makry-Gialos, Makri-Gialos, Makriyalos, Makris Gialos, but the correct way is in two words: MAKRY GIALOS.") and [8], but is less often used in the UK. There is no specific guidance at WP:NCGN on Greek names. I would probably prefer to use either Makriyialos or Makrigialos for the article - obviously with redirects and notes in the article text - but if you have a strong opinion to the contrary please let me know. Regards, Ghmyrtle (talk) 08:04, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
PS - I've just found that NGA seems to use Makriyialos. Ghmyrtle (talk) 08:12, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
We have a naming convention for Greek names, WP:GREEK. According to that, Μακρύ Γιαλός (the name of the municipality) should be transliterated as Makry Gialos. Apparently the name of the village within the municipality is Μακρυγιαλός (Makrygialos). If a different spelling/transliteration is overwhelmingly used in English (in reliable references, that is), we should use that, if it's not that clear, we can mention other commonly used spellings (υ is often given as i, and γ before i is often given as y) in the lead, and provide redirects. I would stick to the WP:GREEK transliterations Makry Gialos and Makrygialos. Markussep Talk 09:45, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. In that case, do you think that Makry Gialos should be used for the municipality, and Makrygialos rather than Makriyialos for a separate article covering both the modern village and the archaeological site? To me, that would seem odd as neither form seems to be the most often used on English language hosted (UK- or US-based) sites. Ghmyrtle (talk) 10:25, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If you look for Makrygialos and Makriyialos in Google Books (which is more reliable than raw Google), Makrygialos has more hits. Most of them are about the archeological site, and also a few travel guides, probably for the beach. The municipality Makry Gialos / Makri Yialos has less hits, which doesn't surprise me. I'm not sure whether village and municipality should have separate articles, I think that only adds to the confusion. The (combined) article isn't enormous anyway. Markussep Talk 11:03, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK - so we stick to a single article at Makry Gialos, which covers the municipality, the modern village, and the archaeological site, yes? I'll merge the Makriyialos article into the longer one, and make a few edits for clarification. I think I should also move this discussion to the article talk page, for future reference. Ghmyrtle (talk) 19:21, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
For further clarification, the municipality goes by the name of Makrys Gialos (see the official website at www.makrys-gialos.gr, though that link appears to be suffering from a DNS error at the moment). They recently adopted Makry-Gialos (note the hyphenation) as the official name for the town, which now appears on the new roadsign as you enter town by road from the west. This replaces Makrigialos, by which the town was previously generally known in its Latin translation (and which still appears on the roadsign as you enter from the east). 94.70.121.107 (talk) 09:02, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
