MP3 nickname[edit]

How about the editors reverting and counter reverting over inclusion of the "MP3 nickname" take a step back and explain their reasoning as to why that should or shouldn't go into the article? Thanks! -- Infrogmation 05:22, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have made that very suggestion on the anonymous user's talk page, which is where the debate has been confined as of right now. I think we've established that the nick name is real, but I guess we can't agree on how common it is.Wbbigtymer 06:40, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wbbigtymer is the only person on wikipedia to have claimed that "MP3" is a "popular nickname" of the Magnolia. CP3, for example, is the popular nickname of the Calliope projects. Evidence suggesting that its a popular nickname is present in news articles from reputable sources found online, interviews with music artists, and more tellingly, in the lyrics of tracks by New Orleans artists, available on OHHLA.com. The evidence is overwhelming that CP3 is not only a valid nickname but a popular one. Wbbigtymer cannot provide any evidence in the form of news articles, interviews, song lyrics that confirm that this nickname even exists for the Magnolia, let alone that its a "popular" one. The only existing reference online to the Magnolia as the MP3 is on Urban Dictionary, which users like Wbbigtymer can submit definitions to. Even more telling, as of 2PM today, that Urban Dictionary definition has garnered 5 thumbs down and no thumbs up as a valid definition, which doesn't help his case. Wikipedia policy is on my side on this one, I will continue to remove the "MP3" reference until proper evidence and citations can be made, otherwise we would justify people randomly adding uncited and unevidenced information to this page or any other page.

First, I'll note that there isn't a single reference provided in the Calliope Projects article. The difference? This anonymous user has no problem with that article because he, in his self-proclaimed expertise, has personal knowledge to support all of the information in that article, including the "cp3" nickname. If he were really trying to improve the quality of wikipedia articles and were aware of "reputable sources found online" why wouldn't he include them? The fact is that there are really aren't any more reputable sources for the cp3 nickname than there are for the mp3 nickname, except ones by and/or about a SINGLE artist, namely c-murder. Obviously c-murder is a valid spokesman for the calliope projects, but that doesn't mean you HAVE to use a rapper's songs or interviews for a fact to be true about a housing project. I haven't once mentioned urban dictionary as a source for this mp3 nickname. I've used a widely circulated documentary video starring, incidentally, c-murder. It's called "Straight from the Projects: 3rd Ward, New Orleans". It starts out in the Calliope and proceeds to the magnolia and melpomene. Now I've also pointed out that besides the one user-edited page that the anonymous user keeps pointing to, (which, btw, as of 4:20 today, has almost as many thumbs down as it does thumbs up for the "cp3" nickname) there are other user-level sources, such as private blogs and myspace pages. I would certainly put these on the same level as the sources that support the cp3 nickname (besides the c-murder ones). The fact is that if c-murder hadn't promoted the nickname cp3, it wouldn't be anymore prominent or any easier to verify in "reputable sources". I also reject your proposed hierarchy of what constitutes "reputable sources." Why would articles and interviews be more valid than an actual documentary on the subject? And why are songs the ultimate reference? This video is about as legit as they come, as far as facts like these go. Now, I didn't edit urbandictionary.com, nor did I make up those blogs or myspace pages that verify that this is a real nickname. Nor did I make host Ice-T specifically say that a nickname for the magnolia projects is "mp3". I also can't control what rappers did or didn't put the nickname in their songs, but that is not the ultimate determining factor in whether it is worth including in the article. With that said, you have failed to discredit my reference and you have even gone so far as to volunteer references I didn't mention only to trash them too. Obviously your real problem is that you, personally, have never heard the nickname and cannot place it. That's your problem, as far as I'm concerned. Wikipedia articles are more concerned with facts. I have presented facts and you, obviously, are the one making things up. And for the record, you're the only one, as of right now, opposing the mp3 nickname on wikipedia, so don't act like you've built a consensus against me.Wbbigtymer 21:37, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have also not heard it ever referred to as MP3. I have been a long time resident of New Orleans, and have always just heard it called the NOLIA.
