Miss Clavel[edit]

The page says of Miss Clavel that she is: "A nun that owns the orphanage/boarding school in which the girls live and is also their teacher. She has Catholic tendencies, as she and her students say grace before every meal." This presents more than one problem. 1) Miss Clavel is not a nun, at least according to the original author's grandson. See https://www.npr.org/2013/10/11/230949629/at-75-shes-doing-fine-kids-still-love-their-madeline If she were a nun, her habit would almost certainly be black. But Miss Clavel's blue uniform is that of a children's nurse - rather like a nanny. 2) If she were a nun, she would not be called Miss Clavel, but "Sister" or "Mother". 3) It is extremely odd to describe a nun as having "Catholic tendencies", unless of course, the contributor to the page wants to imply that she is a nun, but not a Catholic nun, simply one with certain "Catholic tendencies." 4) Saying grace before meals is not something done only by Catholics or by Catholic nuns. If Miss Clavel is, indeed, a nurse, the fact that she says grace before meals doesn't prove she is Catholic. 5) The original author's grandson says it is not an orphanage, so, presumably it is a boarding school. (He also argues, that Madeline is not French, even though the stories are set in Paris. This is quite possible, since children in boarding schools could come from anywhere.) Of course, nuns could be teachers, but it is unlikely that a nun would own her own school (or orphanage, for that matter) since nuns normally do not have that kind of wealth or personal property. In the same way, a children's nurse would probably be an employee. It would be useful to have a source for the idea that Miss Clavel owns the school. 2A00:23C7:57A3:E201:D87C:45E0:AA42:D0C0 (talk) 23:31, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
