Is m4v just a marketing name for the h264 codec?

To make m4a more interesting?

m4a is aac audio filename extension. m4v is avc filename extension. phocks (talk) 02:10, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Merge[edit]

MERGE with MPEG-4 Part 2. phocks (talk) 02:10, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Shouldn't this be merged with MPEG-4 Part 14, since .m4v redirects there? --George100 (talk) 01:55, 15 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Format or file extension[edit]

Is m4v an actual file format, or is it just a file extension used for mp4 files that you want iTunes to open (instead of whatever app is assigned to the .mp4 file extension)? This article implies that there is a DRM element to m4v files, but other sources state that there's no difference. Djkuula (talk) 17:50, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

.m4v is a popular format. It differs from .mp4 as of the codecs it contains and the fact that FairPlay DRM can be put onto m4v whereas it can't on .mp4 meaning that it is a real format that deserves notability. —Preceding unsigned comment added by RoboHomo (talkcontribs) 21:25, 9 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Optimized video podcasts?[edit]

[MPEG-4 AVC] ...is a global media standard with the aim to provide optimized video podcasts for the iPod. is it really?--- —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.224.168.42 (talk) 21:55, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The sentence is obviously misleading. I think the "with the aim..." refers to M4V from the beginning of the sentence, not to MPEG-4 AVC.—J. M. (talk) 22:56, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

References???[edit]

I actually cannot find any other reference than that link I have already added. This is surprising given the increasing popularity... Cyberthrone :) 16:56, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

FFmpeg support[edit]

Does FFmpeg support creating M4V files? 83.26.115.6 (talk) 12:42, 4 June 2011 (UTC) Well, I know that it doesn't support decoding them. 71.34.241.23 (talk) 11:42, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
