N65[edit]

It used to say that the 65 will be converted into a day service, and the N65 will be launched and replacing 65's night service. But now, it says that 65 is a 24-hour route again! What exactly is the truth? --79.69.114.160 (talk) 11:16, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to me that TFL have messed up here. The logical pattern for the last few years has been not to use the 'N' prefix when the night service follows the exact same route as the day service (hence is in fact the same service), hence you have a 24hr service on routes 43, 134, 390 etc.

However when the night route is an extension of the day route (often serving additional suburban areas that are served by tube/train during the day and/or running from central points such as Trafalgar Square) eg. N13, N18, N91, then the 'N' prefix is used. There are also 'N' prefixed routes which have no daytime analogue eg the N5 and the N20 which provide a night service to destinations served by the Northern Line during the day.

As the bus that runs from Ealing to Chessington is a night time extension of the 65, serving additional areas of south west London that are accessible by train during the day, the 'N' prefix should be used for the night service, so it should be the 'N65' for the extended night journey and the '65' during the day.

Can anyone offer any explanation as to why TFL is confusing everything like this? It's not going to work just dumping the 'N' prefix more widely, as the 5 and the 20 for example are already used for entirely separate routes in East London, and people will for example start to expect the 91 to continue to Cockfosters in the day as well. Not to mention the confusion that could arise with the 73 and the N73, which actually overlap each other in their hours of operation, even though it's only the 'N' version which continues to Walthamstow.
