name origin

I guess I shoudl take the newly-minted CJ placename cat off this and associated placenames like Lolo Pass adn the Lolo Nat'l Forest....I've never heard this before:

"Lolo" probably evolved from "Lou-Lou", a pronunciation of "Lawrence," a French-Canadian fur trapper killed by a grizzly bear and buried at Grave Creek. The first written evidence of the name "Lolo" appears in 1831 when Hudson's Bay Company fur trader John Work refers in his journal to Lolo Creek as "Lou Lou." In an 1853 railroad survey and map, Lieutenant John Mullan spelled the creek and trail "Lou Lou." However, by 1865 the name was shortened to Lolo and is currently the name of a national forest, town, creek, mountain peak, mountain pass and historic trail in west central Montana.

I've always assumed it to be either from lolo in the Chinook Jargon, meaning to lift or carry/haul (from Fr. la-la "that one there, that one"....anyone who's heard Quebeckers banter mabye knows what I mean here...here's an example for those who don't.passe-moi la matte là...la-là, la, là-là - "Pass me that hammer there, that one, that one, there!").. Or possibly from lowullo which is sometimes spelled lolo and in more modern CJ lu?lu (?=glottal stop); "in the middle of" or "gathered round", "a circle/round"). But given what's here about John Work - a document specific site would be nice - I guess that's the most likely, though there are clearly other CJ names in Montana...... Anyway, given the ostensible French origin cited, "Lawrence" in French is "Laurent" and it's worth noting the vowels in the French form are more similar than they are in English, and a "native pronunciation" adaptation /r/-/l/ is quite standard in French borrowings in the CJ. This isn't exactly a CJ name, but given that addapted French words in regional English and/or native languages are often "nativized" I'm in a quandary as to waht to do; not stricly CJ but nothign was stricly CJ; it's a native adptation ofa French name/word.....hmmmmm.
