Berlin

Nollendorfplatz is at the end of Motzstraße. I'd suggest that they be merged and listed as Motzstraße.

did some cleaning

I went through and alphabetized the places accordingly. Then i gave Brazil its own catagory since it had as many entires as other catagories. Then i liked red links to thier city articles sections that refered to the gay communities in question, if there was a section in the city's article. I think just doing this makes the article look better, and increases usefulness. It also, even though not directly sources, does help in sourcing by linking to city articles that had already acknolaged the gay communites.

When did the "West Village" and "Greenwich Village" become two separate entities?

Portland

I was wondering if Portland should have oldtown-chinatown included (though really oldtown since there are no gay bars in actual chinatown

Long Island?

Although Long Island holdes some level of autonomy when being refered to (Long Islanders very rarly say NY when asked where they are from outside of the state) it is not a city. Cherry Grove and the Pines are not even on Long Island, they are on Fire Island, but are both part of Suffolk County, which is broken down into Townships, no cities exist in Suffolk County.

Census stats

Soho, London

Since Old Compton Street is part of Soho, they shouldn't have separate entries -- Old Compton is the heart of the gay village in Soho, and Soho itself is known for far more than the gay community -- so I'd propose the entry be 'Old Compton Street, Soho' or 'Soho (Old Compton Street)'. US Table overhaul

I separated out States for better read and expanded City to city/county. Benjiboi 00:13, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

References

I added ref column on all lists please add any you can. Benjiboi 00:14, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

This is a good idea, as it stresses the presence (or absence) of references throughout the article. I've added a similar column the tables in each section, and moved the references to those columns. The next step is to remove the entries that have no references, as material in Wikipedia must be verifiable. -- Mikeblas (talk) 16:45, 26 December 2015 (UTC)

Australia

I thought that collingwood, fitzroy were mixed communities. Needs citations. Enlil Ninlil (talk) 02:22, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Merchant City, Glasgow

The entry on the list for Merchant City and the published reliable sources have been repeatedly removed by Atari 667 (talk · contribs) who argues that though reliable sources exist that explicitly state Merchant City includes a 'gay village', he does not think that is sufficient to include it on this list:

  1. Murphy, Alan; Ford, Rebecca (2002), Footprint Glasgow Handbook: The Travel Guide, Footprint Travel Guides, p. 19, ISBN 9781903471241, There are plenty of pubs, clubs and cafes to choose from, many of them downtown at the gay village in the Merchant City.
  2. Susan Flockhart (Mar 7, 1999). "Glasgow's queer streets". Sunday Herald - Glasgow (UK). What gives Glasgow the edge is the quality of its gay venues and the fact that many of them are owned by one man, an entrepreneur with a mission to develop the gay village concept in Glasgow - who happens to be straight.
  3. "King of the city". The Caterer. 26 July 2001. With Delmonicas and now Café Latte and the Polo Lounge next door, King has given Glasgow its first gay village.

I would welcome other opinions.—Ash (talk) 21:38, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

With the sources above, I believe that it would be ok to include the Merchant City in the article. SparksBoy (talk) 18:54, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
I agree with SparksBoy here. MacMedtalkstalk 03:04, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
Cool, re-added to list on this basis.—Ash (talk) 08:02, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
I note that Atari 667 (talk · contribs) has yet again removed this content without discussion. I have added an edit-war warning to their talk page. Though they have not reverted 3 times in 24 hours, they have reverted 3 times and actively ignored the consensus reached here; appearing to be on a campaign to remove this reliably sourced content.—Ash (talk) 09:23, 17 October 2009 (UTC)

Palm Springs

Isn't the whole of Palm Springs, CA a gay retiree community? I have trouble believing it's just one corner (Arenas Road and Indian Canyon Drive) as stated in the article. The Palm Springs article says it is "the city with the fifth largest percentage of same-sex households in the nation. Former mayor Ron Oden estimated that about a third of Palm Springs is gay." Speciate (talk) 21:52, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

I've fixed it to clarify Palm Springs itself AND the center of the entire GLBT community on Arenas Road/Indian and Palm Canyon Drives. 71.102.21.238 (talk) 11:02, 27 April 2012 (UTC)
Interesting, thanks. Speciate (talk) 22:28, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

Presence of gay villages

In Scandinavia, there are fewer Gay villages and less social segregation of LGBT people, although in large cities, there are still Gay clubs and social meeting places, although they are spread out in cities like Copenhagen, Denmark; Helsinki, Finland; Oslo, Norway and Stockholm, Sweden. This is also true in Tel Aviv, Israel; Bangkok, Thailand; Tokyo, Japan and Washington, DC in the US, where the percentage of LGBT residents are reported at 10 percent of the population. [1] Some cities like Trinidad, Colorado; around San Jose, California or Santa Clara County and La Habra, California in Orange County east of Los Angeles are known for large gender reassignment clinics have sizable numbers of transgender people for the cities sizes. Adinneli (talk) 11:56, 27 March 2016 (UTC)

The 3 smallest LGBT percentage US cities are Birmingham, Alabama; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and by irony, San Jose, California about 50 miles from LGBT mecca San Francisco, which is not as high percentage like Washington, DC (federal district - 10-11% of the district population vs. 8-9% of SF city-county); and Palm Springs, California (not sure this includes all of Riverside County with over a million residents). 12.218.47.124 (talk) 16:37, 13 October 2018 (UTC)

References

In 2019, there are more Gay villages with larger LGBT percentages and closer to you than just San Francisco in the 1970s. For example, Dayton, Ohio's Oregon District has gay/LGBT bars and it may have to do with air force personnel from Wright-Patterson AFB. And I believe Key West FL is a world popular LGBT community, more comparable to Tel Aviv, Israel in the world than let's say Washington (District of Columbia). 2605:E000:100D:C32F:FC2C:3C87:9E6D:7D17 (talk) 02:02, 8 August 2019 (UTC)

So is Kings Heath (motto: It's not Queen's Heath) still a gay village, now that Joe Lycett and his alter ego Ken Roberts has part of his standup act being "How I invented Kings Heath as a gay village and planted the story in Birmingham Live" ?

Also, where's Hebden Bridge and Solva ? Andy Dingley (talk) 20:47, 1 September 2023 (UTC)

yes I'd say so. the local businesses support it and the pride parade recently went ahead for it's 3rd year. So I'd say that this no longer just lycett saying it. It is now 2A00:23EE:1CA0:5916:2C67:9A:5CDA:1659 (talk) 17:28, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
