Oh dear[edit]

Your problem here is that you are not, and possibly cannot, distinguishing between the phrase "dark metal" as a genre descriptor (which I have argued previously it generally isn't) and when "dark" is just being used as a generic adjective. Hence, I agree that Korn, My Dying Bride, Anthrax and Gorgoroth may be in different ways "dark", but it's fairly obvious that they are not playing in the same subgenre! There is a similar problem with "dark rock" and also "experimental metal"; these are not real genres, they are broad umbrella descriptions, and at the minute the Wikipedia articles are not in any way reflecting journalistic consensus (which they should!) but are largely based on original research/synthesis. Blackmetalbaz (talk) 14:12, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please note that this is a list of bands "described as dark metal", and not a list of bands in the dark metal genre. It covers both. It is neither synthesis nor original research, and is most certainly a common link, meeting LISTN. As long as a reliable source called them dark metal, they are in this list, and that is all. Any sources you have about what dark metal actually is (or is not) should be taken to that article.  The Steve  05:13, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Does that justify a list page though? Bands simply "referred to" as a descriptive term by journalists? I'd say merge it with the dark metal page, but I have my own issues with that, considering how vague the article is. 142.105.157.218 (talk) 03:02, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I think it does, which is why I started the page. I made the description less specific merely to avoid another tedious argument over what is and is not a genre. Lists are flexible, so why not take advantage of it? Dark metal is a genre, and many writers have said so. But baz is correct that unless you actually ask the writer or it is specified, he *could* be referring to some other type of metal that is dark (dark in tone, dark in subject matter). Since it is not our place as wikipedia editors to arbitrarily decide what the author *actually* meant (*that* would be original research), it is far easier to expand our definition slightly. It's not like even music experts agree 100% on which bands belong to which genres, or even what constitutes a sub-genre.  The Steve  08:05, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Judging from the description of both the genre and what heavy metal is all about, wouldn't practically *every* metal-band belong under "dark" metal? Even Mötley Crüe has lyrics about hell, but I wouldn't put anything like that (or anything in general) on this page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.98.199.50 (talk) 16:29, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I refuse to even accept....[edit]

that this is even a genre of metal. It's really just gothic metal combined with death metal. Not really a specific genre classification. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.228.99.106 (talk) 18:52, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Black Sabbath is extreme?[edit]

They are literally the first metal band. If they're considered "extreme," then that defeats the purpose of the "extreme" label. Yungstirjoey666 (talk) 15:23, 3 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
