13 Grammy Awards

I made some changes in regard to his Grammys. He won a total of 13 Grammy Awards. If you do a search on the grammy website you will see that he was won 13. He is credited by the recording academy as a 13 time Grammy winner. In addition there are other honors that he has recieved from the recording academy. These are non competitive awards. This include a Legend Award, Lifetime Achievement award as well as 3 of his recordings being inducted into the grammy hall of fame. OK, well obviously something is wrong here. The infobox says 13 but then if you go down and count the awards section (w/o the special awards, jackson 5, or 3 of we are the world honors) it totals to 18...I think the table got messed up by accident.

Secondly, i think there is some confusion about the total awards. Even if the honorary awards are not counted in the competitive field by the Grammy Association, they are still Grammys won by the artist, so in the infobox which is just an overview, it is perfectly acceptable to count them in.

On the grammy records article beyonce knowles is featured as one of the artists with the most grammys won in a lifetime with 16 (3 w Destiny's Child and 13 solo), counting every single grammy she has won, solo or in a group, however for michael only his solo earnings are used, that's not fair. Obviously that is very misleading and knowles has not received more awards than jackson, but based on these articles that is the conclusion and it is a publication mistake.

If groups are counted into lifetime totals, then obviously usa for africa and jackson 5 should be included in jackson's lifetime total, at least on the grammy page and for his biography. not to mention USAFA was a one time project that wouldn't merit its own awards page. I get not placing those here as this is a list of awards received by jackson, however there should at least be some mention as to not mislead readers. In either case, Jackson was the songwriter of "We Are the World" which won for Song of the Year, so his solo wins total to 14 NOT 13.'

Jackson' lifetime Grammy total is 18 (which is what should be placed on the Grammy Award records article, placing him 7th for most lifetime awards overall and 3rd for a male artist.) It should also be mentioned on his bio (explaining that five were within group appearances). They total to 13 awards as a solo artist, 4 as part of USA for Africa (although 1 should DEFINITELY be counted into his regular awards as it is for his songwriting contribution) and 1 with the Jackson 5, with an addition three works honored in the hall of fame, while 3 additional awards have been given to Jackson works, although not directly to Jackson, which deserves an honorable mention in the article somewhere.

It is a total of 13 awards he won. The other awards he got from the Recording Academy are technically not Grammy Awards. He has won a total of 13 Grammy Awards. Sources reliable?

I have concerns that the sources given in this article don't mean our standards as reliable sources. 90% of them come from a fan forum. I don't think that these are appropriate according to our standards. Metros 04:57, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Agreed that, technically, as outlined in Wikipedia policies, MJJForum does not count as a reliable source. However, I don't necessarily view this as a problem for this type of article; that is to say, a list (unless we had greater aspirations, like taking this to FA status). If I were using these sources for the actual Michael Jackson article, it would be a big problem. But for here, the standards can be a little laxer.UberCryxic 07:27, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

No they can't. We don't have different policies depending on the type of article you want to make. For many of these awards, reliable sources are out there, if you are willing to spend some time. Awards without such sources will be removed. If then nothing is left of the article, logically the article will be deleted. I have given you an example of how easy it can be to find the sources (even online) at WP:AIV. Fram 14:18, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Yes, quite a bit of time. The convenience was too tempting. I'll look for better sources, but it will take some effort. And actually, in Wikipedia we do place less emphasis on certain types of articles above others. A list like this is nowhere near as important as the actual Michael Jackson article. You can say what you want all day as a normative principle, but I'm telling you that, descriptively, Wikipedia operates like this all the time (ie. weaker sources in "weaker" or less important articles). You'll find that articles like this one, relating to the awards that a musical act has won, cite fan sites endlessly because they are the ones that usually contain that information in one concentrated place.UberCryxic 17:52, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Yes there is. Technically, the source I added is not reliable. I'm not saying something out of the blue here (I'm actually agreeing with you on that point). But where the material is likely to be less controversial, like a list of awards, the sources get correspondingly less reliable (everywhere in Wikipedia, not just here). Why? See above. Convenience mainly. Some of these acts have won hundreds of awards; scouring the net for reliable sources that say that would be extremely difficult, although achievable with enough will.UberCryxic 17:54, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

This is not a biography. You're making the same irrelevant point as Metros. This is a list of awards. It is less relevant as, say, an article on the actual person.UberCryxic 18:08, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

It is subjected to the policies of living biographies as it is an extension of his biography. Awards and achievements are contained in most biographies; this one is different because it is too large to be contained in the main article on Jackson so it is split into this article. Other examples

Here are a few other similar articles of living persons that suffer from the same problems:

  • Celine Dion awards and accomplishments - Virtually all claims go uncited. There is, however, an external link to Celine Dion's official website, which I presume was the source used for much of this stuff, if not all of it.
  • List of Mariah Carey awards - As with Celine Dion, virtually all the claims here are uncited. In the references section, there is a (oh wait wait this will be shocking!) a fan site that lists her awards.

I could go on like this for a while. Point is Wikipedia has crappy articles like this. Either make the decision to delete them all, or.....don't and try to make a significant change as highlighted by Fram above, which would require a whole lot of effort.UberCryxic 18:20, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

WP:OTHERCRAPEXISTS - so what? then those articles need to be sourced or deleted, the poor quality of one argument is not an argument to not try and improve the quality of others. People keep bringing that up. That's a bad argument. If you want to change this article, you're going to have to deal with all those other articles for the sake of standardization, which Wales has identified as a big problem. You can't just screw one article over and not bother with the rest. Well, people do that often, but they shouldn't. Clarification needed

I also wrote about this on Fredrick's talk page if some want more information. MJJForum has been deleted as a source, but the HIStory album has been left intact. This is vastly redundant as that fan site got these awards from that album (how do I know? Because the awards listed in the fan site and those in the album match almost exactly up until 1994). If, however, people consider the HIStory album a reliable source (or the booklet it came with, which details Jackson's awards up until 1994), then much of this stuff can be cited right now.UberCryxic 18:59, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Almost all of this stuff comes from the History booklet and also the Michael Jackson Ultimate collection booklets it has to be said, they are published material so have been checked for their reliability.Realist2 07:22, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Cleanup in dire need

Seriously, the layout and referencing of this article sucks. The awards need to be rationalised into one and two-shots and otherwise, they need to be collected by type, not a full chronological listing. It's absurt. It's very well researched, as I'm certain it's complete and sourced, but we need to have inline references and citations for every entry, and it can't be a chaotic chronological listing like this. --lincalinca 11:50, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

What happened to all of the awards?

Before there were 413 awards for MJ. Now its down to 100-somthin' awards.

I know you have a problem with the whole citation thing, but I can assure you. All the 413 awards on the old page can be backed-up by Adrian Grant's book called "Michael Jackson: The Visual Documentary"- 2005 edition.

Can we change the awards?

I agree with the person above in the "What happened to all of the awards?" section. All of the awards are missing that MJ has earned. He got at least 400 awards like this article had pointed out a while ago before it got changed. Please Help In Adding Michael's Certification Results

On many of the awards and nominations lists of other artists they have put down the certification results of the albums every-time they were certified. I highly suspect that people are adding these certifications to the number of awards they have one. So if that is the case, could someone please add in Michael's certification results every-time he got certified because i don't really know how the certification results work and they are pretty confusing.

1) vanity fair magazine is not an award show. Please remove that mj was awarded anything from them . They were 2 puff piece articles which are a dime a dozen that many artists receive

Orphaned references in List of awards and nominations received by Michael Jackson

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of List of awards and nominations received by Michael Jackson's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Golden Globe Award inclusion should remain deleted.

I'm sure some of you probably know me but I need to alarm you about the danger of including the Golden Globe Award win for "Ben". As explained in pages such as this page, the award only belongs to songwriters and composers. And on the first page, it clearly says that Jackson was not a songwriter/composer of the song. Now why the Golden Globe site actually listed him having a "win" there confuses me. But I wonder if any of you Jackson fans can explain how Michael can be "credited" with a Golden Globe but not an Academy Award. Why should this be explained by MJ fans? The official website of the Golden Globes lists Jackson as the awardee. Ben did not win the Academy Award, so he doesn’t get credited there. Are you certain the award wasn’t credited to it’s performer in the past and then later changed?. Akhiljaxxn (talk) 19:06, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

Edit conflict

As you guys probably have noticed, this page has been in edit conflict, all I've been doing is trying to correct things and have editors provide real sources, rather than sources from fan blogs and from unconfirmed sources. I've tried to correct things like what this particular award goes to. There's no way you can prove that a singer won Best Original Song at the Golden Globes, it's only assumed. He also was nominated for awards that weren't included originally. Completely agree. His Wikipedia's articles have had multiple issues with vandalism and exaggerate statements during years and this page was a reflect of all of this issues. Just seemed a fan page with inaccurate and unsourced information, and now improved, but still needs to verifiability and notability and we can see many examples as of Today, like with the American Association of Musicians or American Dance Award etc since they haven't references and IDK how notable this awards are (A judgement by not having a Wikipedia entry, per se). In the other point, would be absurd if an user wanna keep records/awards of the Jackson 5 here or awards that aren't directly to MJ. Then if you want to work on making an article better, do so by discussing change on the talk page, and reaching a consensus. You make claims that “a lot” of these Jackson articles wiki needs work. According to you and who else? Jackson pages are some of the most protected on wiki. You have had people on both sides of the isle, fans and non-fans alike, work together for years on these articles. I haven't been participate on this "edit conflict", just gave my impression about BrothaTimothy work here and the page's situation before/after. Surely, with goodfaith I would like to see this page with complete and accurate information as any other of the millions Wikipedia's articles, but leaving a comment not necessarily is a obligation to find the proper sources of each awards in this case due factors like my time etc. I also agree with y'all before a massive changes/edits it's proper discuss first on the talk page, although in a comparative I would like to suggest current version restored by @Factlibrary1: just brings back problems mentioned above. Now, there is a MJ:Sanctions that helped/helps a lot preventing desinformation/vandalism etc, however, that was not always the case. But I completely disagree with both versions restore recently after. Maybe this could be necessary forwarded to the Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents/WP:Sanctions IMHO. This page will be restored (by an admin) to a a time when it was more stable if consensus can not be reached. That time was before it was vandalized to shreds as it is now. One editor is not allowed to monopolize a stable article as Timothy has. In fact, Timothy edits appear to be nothing more than vandalizing of Jackson pages. He has made these pages, and others mentioning Jackson in any sense, a target. The need to work with other editors is a must. Per sanctions on Jackson articles, you can not undo a revert of your edit once reverted without taking issue to talk page.
