Talk:List of Roman tribunes

While this list could be useful, without some qualifications for inclusion it could easily become unwieldy. There were a lot of known/documented tribunes in ancient Rome: for example, many imperial consuls were military tribunes at the start of their careers, & many were tribunes of the people prior to becoming a praetor. So perhaps this list ought to be limited to those who were tribunes during the Republic (& the period of Kings). I don't know if after omitting the imperial tribunes we reach a more manageable set, but there obviously were some military tribunes famous enough to warrant inclusion, e.g. Lucius Siccius Dentatus. (Although Dentatus appears to be semi-legendary.) -- llywrch (talk) 18:07, 28 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks llywrch. I don't know enough about tribunes in the imperial age to comment. But it seemed useful to have a go-to list of tribunes, at least for the republican era. When it gets bigger, it may be possible to arrange it better, so it is easier to digest, e.g. collapsible groups arranged by year or decade/century. There is a long way to go before it needs to be managed / arranged, and I haven't worked on it for a while. Happy for you to play around with it if you want, of course. --Urg writer (talk) 21:18, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Adding entries[edit]

Hi, and thanks for creating this page! I have a couple hundred entries to add to this list; is it okay if I insert them now? They're all plebeian tribunes so far, but I think I'll be able to add another chart for military tribunes in the near future. It looks like the list of consular tribunes can be found here, too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribuni_militum_consulari_potestate Do you want me to go ahead and create three separate charts on the page, one for plebeian, one for consular, and one for military? That might be the best way to keep everything organized. Thanks! Dfault (talk) 17:21, 26 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds great. Thanks for your contribution! Please organise the page in whichever way you think presents the information best. It would be great if sources can be included also.--Urg writer (talk) 21:28, 26 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No problem! Most of the names were pulled directly from the pages under https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Roman_gentes. I automatically had the new entries include whichever page I pulled the name from as the source, but I don't know if it's good practice or not to cite other Wikipedia pages themselves as sources. Should I go into each wiki page and copy the original source? Also, is there a way to get this page to automatically consolidate redundant references? For example, if more than one tribune comes from gens Junia, it probably doesn't need to cite the gens Junia page separately each time it's referenced. Dfault (talk) 01:55, 27 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK never mind, I updated the sources for the new entries so that now they all point to their original sources instead of just the wiki pages where I found them. I managed to find references for all but 10, I think. I still need to pick a consistent format for all the references and get, e.g., the Livy entries to point to their corresponding passages on Wikisource like your original references do, etc, but it's a start for now.Dfault (talk) 07:53, 27 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I'm seriously impressed. That's an amazing amount of work. And an excellent result. It looks fantastic. For anyone interested in taking this further, I noticed there is another page with a collection of some tribunes here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Roman_tribunes_of_the_plebs. Also, apparently there is a book listing all the magistrates of the republic, including tribunes: Thomas_Robert_Shannon_Broughton#Magistrates_of_the_Roman_Republic. Once again, thanks, I'm very impressed.--Urg writer (talk) 21:55, 27 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to contribute :-) Right now I'm working on making the reference sections clickable so they jump to the relevant sections of WikiSource, LacusCurtius, etc like you did with the original references. When I finish with that, I'll take a look at the tribunes category to see if we missed any. Broughton looks pretty comprehensive! It looks like he does a year-by-year breakdown of every office holder: https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015009351001;view=1up;seq=43 I'll have to come up with a way of automatically searching/consolidating that next :-D — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dfault (talkcontribs) 03:09, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Good call with Broughton! Just went through his two volumes and supplemental -man was he exhaustive! There were about 60 tribunes on our list that he didn't catch, about 260 that were on both our lists, and about 220 new ones on his list that weren't on ours yet. Just added those now along with the links to the relevant passages in volume 1 (couldn't find a good place where I could send direct links to volume 2). We might now have the most comprehensive list of plebeian tribunes on the internet 🤣🤣🤣 Dfault (talk) 08:04, 30 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
