Sources[edit]

Some amphitheatres are cited without any sources and are not mentioned in the linked articles too. E.g. there was afaik no amphitheatre in Kos and also a google-search didn't showed anything. Could the person who added it to the list please cite a source? --Enlil2 17:35, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to put it here, but I'm missing at least two: the clearly visible Roman Amphitheatre in Amman, Jordan and the one I visited lately: the one still to be excavated at Nicopolis ad Istrum in the north of Bulgaria.

Concerning my addition of Vienne to the list; my source was the Vienne article itself, which mentions one.

When I look into it further, I can only find picture of a normal theatre. It's likely that somebody confused the two types in the Vienne article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by {} (talk • contribs)

I've corrected the article Vienne, Isère. It clearly refers to the building on Mont Pipet, which means the scenic Roman theatre. See also the satellite image --Enlil2 14:42, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am starting to think the Bosra, Syria addition is wrong. I can only find pictures of a theatre. Can anybody confirm or deny this? --SkiDragon 04:13, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Remainings of an amphitheatre have been found in the late 1980s. There is not much to see, I have only a foto of a part of what has probably been a Vomitorium. Altough the identification as amphitheatre has been disputed in the beginning (see here for literature) it has AFAIK been confirmed and is also on this map image:Bostra_map_of_Roman_city.jpg (sorry for the low quality photo of the low quality map). Since Bostra is the capital of the Roman province Arabia and was also having a military camp, the existence of an amphitheatre is not so surprising. --Enlil2 19:57, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the info. It also looks like there is a circus there. I guess I will add it to the Circus (building) article.--SkiDragon 23:02, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. There is a circus. It has been excavated quite a while ago. For literature, see e.g. Maurice Sartre: Bostra des origines à l'Islam. Librairie Orientaliste Paul Geuthner, Paris 1985 (There is almost no english literature about it since mainly French plus some Italian and German archeologists were there.) --Enlil2 11:01, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please Confirm or Deny[edit]

While going through some other lists, I came across some names I couldn't conform. Can anyone confirm these amphitheatres?

--SkiDragon 04:49, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I did not find those, not meaning they could not be existing. Where did you find your list? Joris1919 02:06, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The list was compiled from other language wikipedias, as well as any links I added to the bottom. --SkiDragon 04:30, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think the Stara Zagora entry is incorrect. Can anybody confirm?--SkiDragon 01:35, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In addition to the new French locations I just added, I also found references to the following, but was not confident to add them. Forgive the poor formatting.--SkiDragon 08:05, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

And the following are the locations from the German list that I have not yet added to the English list because of lack of confirmation.--SkiDragon 08:21, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A good book supposedly is Jean-Clauude Glovin's L'Amphitheatre Romain.--SkiDragon 08:29, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The following locations were identified by a user on Google Earth, but I can find no confirmation save for suspicious shapes on the ground, and sometimes not even that.
From the "high-res" list

From the "low-res" list

From the "unlocated" list. These just point to the general area I think.

From other posts, where the author is not even certain himself.

Finally, there are two "private" amphitheatres, and I am not sure how to add them.

For Scarbantia, Hungary please see http://translate.google.com/#hu%7Cen%7Chttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.muemlekem.hu%2Fmuemlek%3Fid%3D4738 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Antoniusz (talkcontribs) 14:18, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

New Format?[edit]

I was thinking of playing around with the following table structure, which I took from the List of Virtual Console games (North America) article.--SkiDragon 03:09, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I am thinking about replacing the current list with this one, but I will wait a few days to see if anybody comments.--SkiDragon 08:58, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would omit the images, list is more readable without them --Enlil2 13:12, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What if the width were reduced to 100 pixels, or less?--SkiDragon 09:06, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If somebody could show me how to make coordinate-type links, it would be very appreciated.--SkiDragon 09:36, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

see Template:Coor and the sub-templates described there, also Wikipedia:WikiProject_Geographical_coordinates#Implementation_details --Enlil2 13:12, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I decided to go ahead and change the main article.--SkiDragon 09:39, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I thought about adding coordinates for all sites, and indicating which are exact, as in the German list.--SkiDragon (talk) 23:35, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Revised layout[edit]

<moved from User talk:Docu>

Your coordinate formatting was useful, especially the "Map of all coordinates" box you added, but you should be aware that you removed the labels on some of the coordinates. They used to be called "Location", which is admittedly not a useful label, but when more than one amphitheatre was located at a single site, the label differentiated between the two.--SkiDragon (talk) 00:46, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

</moved from User talk:Docu>

Thanks. For Rome, I had split the entry in several rows and moved the coordinates to the corresponding one. There are two other places with two coordinates, maybe we can do the same there? -- User:Docu
BTW I added the name tag to the coordinates for the one city where this was missing. -- User:Docu

Barcelona Roman Amphitheatre[edit]

A user on the Catalan WP asked me to tidy Barcelona roman amphitheatre. Not sure if it ought to be on here too? Cheers PatHadley (talk) 22:56, 11 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Half-amphitheaters?[edit]

Is there evidence that these aren't just theaters? If so, it should be cited. - Eponymous-Archon (talk) 17:36, 20 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The supposed amphitheatre at Caesarea Maritima seems to be merely a theatre. I don't see any evidence of it being an amphitheatre, and photos of the site seem to back that up. If it is an amphitheatre, it would be one of the only true amphitheatres in the Eastern Roman Empire, as it appears gladiator combat in the Eastern Empire was nowhere near as popular as it was in the West, and/or it was done in theatres, so no (or very few) true amphitheatres were built. Amphitheatre in Constantinople?[edit]

I'm surprised that there was no amphitheater in Constantinople. No doubt there were gladitorial contests there prior to the 5th century, and I would not think the Hippodrome would be provide a good venue. Perhaps there was one, but has since been ploughed under? Legio[edit]

Can someone please help convert the text of the coordinates into a link by using the Coord template? I could not understand how to do this. Thanks. רמרום (talk) 10:33, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
