creating a summary of all african american greek organizations. Currently the listings only consist of a few stray articles and the NPHC which is only 9 out of maybe 16 organizations. Something more comprehensive needs to be made. —Preceding unsigned comment added by GomabWork (talkcontribs) 10:18, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Defunct vs. Unsuccessful Attempts at Formation

Defunct as per Merriam Webster Dictionary: no longer living, existing, or functioning. Synonyms see dead. Other dictionaries: defunct - having ceased to exist or live; "the will of a defunct aunt"; "a defunct Indian tribe." Defunct - no longer in force or use; inactive; "a defunct (or dead) law"; "a defunct organization." See http://www.wordreference.com/definition/defunct. Defunct is NOT ONLY use as synonym of business dissolution. An entity that was organized, lasted for several years and died out is defunct, regardless of legal status. Most local fraternities are not incorporated and when they die, they are defunct. Please stop changing the article.--Coquidragon (talk) 22:44, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

Not that simple, Coquidragon. The terms "Social" and "Service" have other meanings as well, but are legal designations that apply to fraternities and sororities; a Fraternity may be designated "social" even if it has a service history. That is why several organizations that consider themselves service oriented still are "Social" Fraternities. More to the point, I take the position that the colloquial usage of "defunct," as you defined above, is improper, precisely because the majority of the organizations listed on the page ARE incorporated--in fact they would have to be incorporated to be recognized by either the National Pan-Hel or most campuses, period. As such, "defunct" is confusing at best, and an improper designation. Your thoughts? -199.173.224.32 (talk) 16:01, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

--More to the point, an organization can't be defunct if it was never founded. -RoBoTamice 13:57, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

So, on December 5, 2005, a local fraternity was founded with 8 members. It never expanded. In 2010, the last member of the fraternity graduated. Did the organization never exist? I was a member of an organization that attempted to be formed for 5 years. C'mon. The organization existed for 5 yrs. It has a founding date and it is now defunct, as it no longer exists. An organization that attempts at formation would be one under which a number of individuals unite, but when push came to shove, the organization never materialized. This is not the case with the organizations in this list.--Coquidragon (talk) 14:54, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
More like, the fraternity might have begun in 1903 on the Indiana University campus, but there were too few registrants to assure continuing organization. That's what the history book says, and is the only record of Alpha Kappa Nu. Never founded, but attempted. A 1905 Chicago Defender blurb reported that Pi Gamma Omicron was formed at Ohio State University, but Ohio State's registar confirmed the same year that it did not. Clearly not the same as the example you cited. But to address your specific example, most organzations on the list have founding dates that are month to years after their period of organization. For instance, Alpha Phi Alpha was operating at least as early as 1905, but their founding date is in 1906.-199.173.225.33 (talk) 15:26, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

Stand corrected. Thanks. BTW, great job with the introductory paragraph.--Coquidragon (talk) 18:16, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

No problem, and thank YOU--I had no question that you were editing in good faith. --199.173.225.33 (talk) 20:06, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Malika Kambe Umfazi Sorority

I agree that there are some fraternal organizations missing from this list. Malika Kambe Umfazi Sorority, Inc is one such organization. I'm currently working on a wiki page for the sorority, though it is not searchable at this time. I think that if the organization attempted to form, and there is historical documentation, it should be counted in this list. As for MKU, this organization is incorporated and still exists, so I'm going to add it to the list. I will direct you to look at www.malikakambeumfazi.org for more information. — Romar731 (talk) 04:05, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

Definitely getting near 3RR.

@BlackAmerican:, @IronGargoyle:: We are definitely getting close to WP:3RR, let's discuss the situation on the Talk page before things get much uglier. User:IronGargoyle , I think *most* of these organizations really existed and references can be found. User:BlackAmerican, until these groups can at least be referenced for existance, I don't think they belong here, but I'm definitely interested in trying to find references. Black Greek 101 is a *great* reference. IMO, anything we can reference there belongs here, *either* in the table, or in text.Naraht (talk) 16:24, 10 March 2016 (UTC)

I would say that the rate is much closer to one revert a day than "near 3RR" but ok. The number of edits are simply a function of section-based editing on my part. Notice also that I have been avoiding blind reverts when improvements have been made. I have no opposition whatsoever to entries being re-added if reliable, independent sources are added for them (i.e., following the WP:LISTCOMPANY guideline). Opening Paragraph

@BlackAmerican:, @IronGargoyle: For the opening paragraph... I think there are some rewrites that can be done, but it appears that primary point is about the 60 miles. I think that IronGargoyle and I are on the same page in that the fact that it is 60 miles is reasonable to include, but it does *not* need to be referenced. (also, to avoid putting two numbers back to back, I think that Sixty should be used instead of 60.Naraht (talk) 16:49, 10 March 2016 (UTC)

Agree, but what if it is removed later for no reference? BlackAmerican (talk) 18:02, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
Then put it back, get me and together we'll get the sane people of wikipedia to fix it. :) Seriously, distances between two points isn't something that, IMO needs referencing.Naraht (talk) 21:27, 10 March 2016 (UTC)

Groups listed

If no one has a problem, I'll work on making the references included by User:BlackAmerican into looking better, OK?Naraht (talk) 16:49, 10 March 2016 (UTC)

make it look great! BlackAmerican (talk) 18:02, 10 March 2016 (UTC)

Status

I think I've found what I can as a reference. If the sorority has a website that is for than just a chapter that isn't just a landing page, I think I added it as an external link.

  • Lambda Chi Epsilon founded in 1980, I can't find any google hits for...
  • Kappa Psi Omega founded in 1989, ditto...
