Jewish American actress?

Is Lisa Bonet by definition not an Jewish American actress?

Yes, she is. Ericlitman 04:16, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
her mother is a jew, so she is a jew —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.164.204.109 (talk) 13:41, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
jewish by name. not a practicing jew. i don't understand when people think they can be called jewish just because they were born jewish. or for any other religion too. either you are a jew because you follow the religion, or your not. its not a race or genetic identity. it's like saying your a l.a. lakers fan because your mother was, even though you don't support l.a. lakers. --78.86.159.199 (talk) 12:09, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
See the jewish pages for details. "Jewish" can be considered a religion, an ethnicity (at one time it was considered a separate race), or a national identity. Like most questions of heritage and identity, it's a fuzzy label that carries a lot of baggage that means different things to different people. "Half-jewish" doesn't have any religious meaning, but as an ethnicity it would be equivalent to saying "half-Irish". Even the purely religious question is complex; a reform rabbi would ask whether she was raised in a jewish household, while an orthodox rabbi, upon discovering that her mother was jewish, would consider her jewish regardless of how she was raised (or even whether she's practiced other faiths!).
From an encyclopedia point of view, which is what we should be discussing, she's jewish if a WP:RS reliable source says she is. If sources disagree, then we report it that way. Wellspring (talk) 14:27, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
Nonsense. A "reliable source" could say she's made of cheese, but that would not give anyone the right to say, "Lisa Bonet is made of cheese." By the way, that should be, "From an encyclopedic point of view." My reliable source? The English language. 2604:2000:1580:440E:A878:82F5:1807:6497 (talk) 00:34, 22 November 2018 (UTC)
She is jewish, and her name "Bonet" is French. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A01:E35:8A8D:FE80:E9CE:C8AC:F016:3F83 (talk) 14:12, 2 July 2016 (UTC)
