It seems to me that the New Grove carries more weight than an obituary in the LA Times and another obituary on the USC website that misquotes the LA Times source on the date of death. That New Grove article describes him unequivocally as a musicologist, and only mentions his activities as a pianist and conductor in the last sentence. Personally, I think this is not a well-balanced assessment, especially since his obviously important activities as a teacher don't receive an up-front mention (also true in this article, up until now). All of these sources appear rather vague on just what it was that he taught: piano, theory, musicology, or some combination of the three.—Jerome Kohl (talk) 03:43, 30 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
