1600 Contact with Europeans?[edit]

Since when were the indigenous Native Americans first contacted by European colonists in 1600? Who's rewriting history here? Of course, the referral to this date is unreferenced, as is nearly all of the article.Stevenmitchell (talk) 18:53, 10 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Stevenmitchell, it took a long time -- centuries -- for Europeans to explore the Americas. I am certainly no expert, but for what little it's worth, I personally don't know of any European exploration of this particular area before Verrazzano, in the mid 1520s, and then nothing further till Hudson, in 1609. Both of them were mostly just sailing up the coast, and apparently didn't stay in this area for any great length of time. I gather that actual colonization in this area didn't start until like the 1630s or 1640s.
I don't know where or not it's true that the Kechemeche were uncontacted by Europeans until around 1600, but it sure doesn't seem unlikely to me. I will therefore be removing the "dubious" that you added, and replacing it with a "citation needed". I will include a pointer to this section of the talk page in the "reason" field. If you want to change it back to "dubious", I'm not going to complain - like I said, I'm no expert. It just seems to me like "citation needed" is more appropriate here than is "dubious". -Rwv37 (talk) 05:41, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
