First on air[edit]

Someone needs to verify the 'First on air' date (info box) because '1983' is not correct. I was a disc-jockey at KRKK 1360 AM in 1979, 80 and 81, and listened to it from 1975, so it's at least that old. Unfortunately, I do not know the correct date. The station was quite old when I was there. The date listed is probably the date the ownership changed to the current owner(s), but it was on the air long before 1983. If I had to guess, KRKK was probably first on the air in the late '60s to very early '70s at the latest.--Equilibrious (talk) 18:01, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, 1983 is the date the ownership changed. I will give KRKK a call soon and see if they know the exact date. Thanks for pointing it out! Question: was KRKK always oldies? Milonica (talk) 22:29, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, KRKK used to be a Top 40 format most of the years I was aware of it. It had your typical talk-heavy morning drive shift and then a typical Top 40 rotation throughout the rest of the day. At night the station morphed into an almost AOR / request format with the rotation intersperced. Weekends it broadcast a lot of syndicated content like American Top 40 (day) and Inner-View (night), King Biscuit Flower Hour (Sundays). Sundays also had some local talkshow content as well. --Equilibrious (talk) 18:41, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

On a related note; KSIT was not always a sister station (worked there too) to KRKK. KQSW (predominantly Country) always was a sister station to KRKK, but not KSIT. KSIT started off as a competitor in the '80s. Sounds like Big Thicket brought all stations under the same umbrella. And, for what it's worth, KQSW was an automated station. So was KSIT when it first started out. KSIT later morphed into a live format. KQSW stayed automated during my time there.--Equilibrious (talk) 18:41, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If we could find sufficient sources for that information I would like to add some of it to the article. I had no idea there was so much history behind those three stations. Milonica (talk) 22:10, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure what constitutes a 'source', but I can say this. While I was there the DJ on duty had to not only run the live broadcast (board) at KRKK, but also fix any malfunctions with the automation over at KQSW (next door). So, during any given shift (particularly a night shift) the DJ was actually running two stations at the same time with no other assistance (engineer or anyone else). --Equilibrious (talk) 19:11, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I added some information to the article based on what you told me. I also got the precise air date that KRKK signed on via calling the station. The lady didn't know the KQSW air date but is going to call me back when she finds out. Hopefully I can get KSIT at the same time. I am going to add it to my front page (User:Milonica) a new project that I am going to start to get air dates from stations via calling their offices. I will also collect them on a website so I can cite them. Milonica (talk) 22:21, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
