Julia Ota?[edit]

Julia Otaa, right?

Julia(ジュリア) is a baptismal name. Otaa(おたあ) is a personal name in Japan. It is not surname. --KAMUI (talk) 10:03, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@KAMUI: Her name is only recorded in Western sources in Latin characters "Ota". The Japanese name おたあ or 大田 or other hiragana/kanji representations are later recreations, and Juan G. Ruiz de Medina went with 大田 out of what seems like personal preference. In the end, we can't know if the Japanese name was a given name or a surname because the Jesuit records don't make the distinction. _dk (talk) 19:44, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
