List of recoding artists[edit]

As there apparently were many artists who recorded with Jubilee (see [1]) this list could become very unwieldy. Membership in the list needs to documented by citations to reliable sources. The web site at soulfullkindamusic doesn't qualify as "reliable" in the Wikipedia sense. I suggest that we limit the artists listed in this article to ones with WP articles where reliable sources support that they recorded for Jubilee, or eliminate the list and put those artists into a category. -- Donald Albury 12:20, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What to do about false information that is sourced[edit]

"First black vocal group to reach the white market" in 1953? Has anyone heard of the Mills Brothers or the Ink Spots? It's a sourced statement, so I hate to just delete it, but what is the best way of correcting the error, or putting it into some context. Most certainly, "Crying in the Chapel" was culturally significant. 78.26 (I'm no IP, talk to me!) 23:12, 6 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've adjusted it by adding a couple of words. I'm sure Gillett would have known that such a bald statement was false, but I don't have the book to hand. Ghmyrtle (talk) 10:32, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I dunno. It's a lot better, but it still seems to imply that white audiences were ignorant of black artists in general before 1953, and that just isn't true. What is significant about "Crying" is that it signaled an awareness by white audiences of a syle that is now generally referred to as "doo-wop" (a very different style then Mills Brothers or Ink Spots, etc.) and one of the main precursors of rock music. Like you, I don't have the book available to me, I'd like to know what it truly says.78.26 (I'm no IP, talk to me!) 14:42, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Old edition, but, in a chapter on independent labels: "Jubilee, formed in 1948, had been the first [such label] to establish the possibility of reaching the white market with a black vocal group, when the Orioles' "Crying in the Chapel" made the pop music top twenty in 1953..." So, the key point is that it was the first independent label to do that. I'll rejig the wording a little. Ghmyrtle (talk) 14:56, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent. That is probably a true statement. I can't think of any counter-examples. Thanks much! By the way, since the "history" section of the article is sadly lacking, it would be good to use this source for the date of establishment. All the best, 78.26 (I'm no IP, talk to me!) 15:36, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, they are probably referring to an R&B act on an independent label as opposed to a jazz act on a major label. Steelbeard1 (talk) 16:06, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

List of recording artists (again)[edit]

I have gone through the lists of artists that recorded with Jubilee and Josie Records. Many of the names in the lists were not linked to WP articles, and had no sources cited. I linked the artists for whom I could find WP articles which were about an artist or group that had recorded with one of the labels. I removed artists for which I could find no WP article that had any connection to Jubilee or Josie. Note that some of the names that were listed do match the names of WP articles, but those articles did not mention Jubilee or Josie, and were about artists or groups which did not perform in the genres handled by those labels, or that were active long after the labels ceased production. I suggest that names should not be added to the lists unless they are linked to a WP article which includes reliably sourced connections to the labels. If you want to add a group for which a WP article doesn't exist, and there are reliable sources available, please create the appropriate article using reliable sources, and then add a link to the article. - Donald Albury 14:47, 22 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

We have Category:Jubilee Records artists. The lists are similar, but different. It would be worthwhile ironing out the discrepancies between the two lists. Ghmyrtle (talk) 16:10, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I removed one artist from that category because I could find nothing in the article connecting the artist to Jubilee. I'm not sure at this point how much time I am willing to devote to this article, I have many half-finished projects. - Donald Albury 17:24, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
