He also spoke numerous languages including several North American native languages such as Ojibway. He summered at his cottage in Pointe au Baril, Ontario, and kept such meticulous records for so many years about natural conditions there, including water temperature, weather, and fishing observations, that the Canadian government consulted his data to update some of their early data. He started visiting Pointe au Baril in the late 1890s, and continued until the time of his death.
