more details in Publication History, please?[edit]

I find the Publication History for this character to be sketchy and does not answer questions I came looking for, here are some suggestions for further content

what writers and artists worked on the Johnny Quick stories during his initial run? this information could be found (and cited) in the Grand Comics Database. Some good artists worked on this and should be given credit, for example Mort Meskin

I see in the side panel it was Mort Weisenger who came up with the idea, but this key fact should also be added to, and expanded, in the publication history section. why did Weisenger come up with such a character when DC already had The Flash? this bit would require research and citations, maybe check backissues of the Alter Ego fanzine which covers Golden Age minutiae. I do know a couple issues later More Fun also added Aquaman and Green Arrow, also both derivative characters, so some decision had been made at an editorial level to quickly change the content of More Fun.

one thing that could be added is that Johnny Quick actually outlasted the other Golden Age characters, specifically the Flash, because like Green Arrow and Aquaman his series was a backup in Adventure Comics and not cancelled til the pagecount was reduced and something had to go. Last appearance Dec 1954, meaning he almost survived to the time of The Flash's revival two years later (whereas the Golden Age Flash was last seen in All Star 57, 1951). The publication dates are factual and could easily be cited from the GCD or Mike's Newsstand

another, subjective aspect: the Johnny Quick stories are considered to have better art, and make more creative use of the superspeed concept, than did Golden Age Flash stories. Such a claim obviously needs a citation, and I believe it was DC's book The Greatest Golden Age Stories Ever Told where I first saw this argued in one of the essays. The argument may have been made, and published, elsewhere. J Edward Malone (talk) 13:23, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
