How John Watkins (may have) caused the unintentional downfall of Morris Iemma[edit]

In September 2008, Morris Iemma resigned as NSW Premier because he could not get agreement from the ALP Head Office of who he wanted in his Cabinet in a reshuffle and what caused this reshuffle - John Watkins' retirement. Hence how John Watkins' retirement caused the unintentional downfall of Iemma. I had to look for the following article: http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/lightning-strike-asbr-iemma-forced-to-go/2008/09/05/1220121483704.html especially the part "as part of a reshuffle following the shock resignation of deputy premier John Watkins" from the Morris Iemma article as others were unwilling to look into it themselves after I made the suggestion that they do so. The claim that Watkins' resignation caused the downfall of Iemma is way too strong. Certainly, it was one of many factors that led Iemma to resign, principal amoung those being Iemma's inabilty to get through his proposed power reforms and and, according to this Herald article, "his popularity has continued to slide as the government lurched from crisis to crisis", most notably problems in the health, community services, and transport portfolios. The rise of the right-wing Terrigal faction, led by Eddie Obeid and Joe Tripodi pushed Iemma. Annedcotal evidence indicates that Watkins was not prepared to be part of a government where the Terrigals had a controlling influence. Jherschel (talk) 09:43, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
