Religion cat =

Necrothesp, I look to the WP:BLPCAT criteria for applying religion categories to biographies. This states "Categories regarding religious beliefs (or lack of such) or sexual orientation should not be used unless the subject has publicly self-identified with the belief (or lack of such) or orientation in question, and the subject's beliefs or sexual orientation are relevant to their public life or notability, according to reliable published sources."(My emphasis added). While Fitzgerald presumably fulfils the self-identification criteria, I don't think it's fair to say his notability derived from his Catholicism? I genuinely don't know what "He was a prominent Roman Catholic" is supposed to mean... Bastun^{Ėġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ!} 14:05, 15 April 2019 (UTC)

"the subject's beliefs or sexual orientation are relevant to their public life or notability". Given he was a major benefactor to Catholic charities I think the categorisation is fine as it is. His Catholicism was clearly relevant to his public life! I agree that religion shouldn't be categorised unless it's relevant; here it clearly was. In England, where Roman Catholics are in the minority, being a "prominent Roman Catholic" is significant. WP:CAT/R is pretty clear: "For a dead person, there must be a verified consensus of reliable published sources that the description is appropriate." That's absent from the article. Category:Irish Roman Catholics is equally clear: "Members of the Roman Catholic Church, either past or present for whom their membership was or is a defining characteristic or related to their notability and where the person has self-identified as a Roman Catholic." Was Fitzgerald's Catholicism a "definining characteristic"? It's certainly not clear from the article. Restore the English religious category if you must (even though it doesn't meet CAT/R) - people just seem to add that cat to anyone who might be or have been a Catholic - but leave him out of the Irish equivalent, thanks.
